Hi, this is my first post, My son is an international student here, he is now in
grade 11, as his first year in the US, alone, no cousin, for me I live in the other part of the world, my son is intereted in studying music, drumset, he chooses Berklee college of music ( music engineering) to be his first choice. the counsellors in his school could not give him much details about music schools.
For me, I think it must be better to study music in a liberal art college,
he is pretty good in Maths and Physics(A+ in AP class), or he could enter a double major of engineer and music at U of Michigan, or U of Rochester in New york.We are non-musical family, and he is very talented at drums, He is also a city mouse ,he prefer urban more than suburban, big city than small town. I try to help him to narrow out where to go and what career in the future.
This summer he will go back home, preparing for the AUDITION, SAT1, SAT2, and we are trying to look around and figure out what is right for him,
is there anyone could suggest us more options , how about music in Boston U
or MI in california? Thank you

I think you have to ask this in the other sections.

Berklee is definitly a good music school, Juilliarad would be good too. Most ppl who are good at math are also good at music. I wouldn't know where else to look

Lawrence and Oberlin are liberal arts schools with well-known music programs.

Carnegie Mellon has good engineering and good music. Don't know how easy it is to squeeze in a double major though. Berklee is very respected with more of an emphasis on contemporary music than most schools.

drummom, I'd suggest you spend some time in CC's Music Major forum. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/

Have him look into USC (in Los Angeles) for great music school with opp to double major in another area. With NMF, they give wonderful scholarships, too.

IF you are looking for a safety, Drexel University in Philadelphia has what is supposed to be a very good music industry program that includes both sound engineering and business. I don't think Drexel itself has a big music performance program, but Philadelphia has music everywhere -- tons of opportunities to study, listen, and play. If he's really good, there may be a joint program with the Curtis Institute (a Juilliard-type conservatory).

usc is a great school for this
