Hey guys so I put Finance as my intended major for Penn State University Park. Couple of questions, does this mean I am automatically applying for Smeal Business? And will this hurt my chances of getting in? I figured the intended major doesn't mean much considering many students change their majors

My Stats:
GPA 3.5
SAT 1940

This is my number 1 school so I'm nervous/paranoid/anxious

Yes, by applying for finance you are by default applying for the Smeal College of Business. I don’t think they consider your application for a specific major, you just get into the college with your major in it and then officially declare your major at the end of your sophomore year.

As far as your chances go, I think you have a good shot. Your GPA isn’t super high but your SAT score is very solid. Keep in mind though that Penn State doesn’t superscore/combine your best SAT results from several attempts; they only look at your highest single-sitting score.

I plan on calling the admissions office on January 2nd (when the admissions office re-opens after break) to change my intended major to undecided. I have good reasons to do so. Do you think that they will change it for me?

I can relate to this; I also had the same concern. I called last week because I too applied to a business major and have yet to receive a decision. They said that it shouldn’t hurt you applying for a specific major, but if you are denied, you can call and ask them to evaluate you as undecided. Best of luck to you!
