So I have four clubs that I’m interested in, however, I’m not sure if I have enough time for all four clubs along with classes. One of the those is a dance club that I’m planning to try out for. I’m not sure how demanding the practice schedule will be (have to ask the members) but I assume it’s pretty time-consuming since it’s something that requires practice, especially for someone who is not experienced. One of the clubs meets biweekly, while another is sort of event based so those two are not too time-consuming. But I also have classes that requires a lot of textbook reading and studying. Currently, I feel like no matter how much work I get done, I still have more to do!
The main reason why I want to join the dance team is so I can increase my self-confidence by doing something I’ve never done and have a fear for (stage-fright). I also love dancing and want to be a part of a dance team since high school. I though about giving up one but I feel that all four clubs are important to me.
I want to keep myself busy but I also don’t want to put my grades at risk by joining too much extra-curricular activities. The try-out is coming up soon so what should I do??
Try them all out. You can still decline the dance team if you make it through tryouts, but that might not even happen. You will probably know after a couple of meetings of each which you should stick with.
One advantage of clubs that have a big time commitment is that you also build strong friendships there.
I would start “joining” all the clubs you are interested in…some will stick, and some won’t.
You should certainly try out the clubs and see which ones are the best fit. Clubs are a fantastic way to meet new people!
Joining a club or two is great, but I would like to caution you about over-extending yourself. Grad schools and future employers won’t care if you were in dance club or sewing club or no clubs, so make sure your priority remains classes, grades, and research (if it applies to your field).
I’d say go ahead! try along. Have the courage to make time for it. You’ll never know when you can actually find the time if not now. In college, your best time is now.
