Hi, I have an interview this Tuesday at the University of Chicago. I am sort of freaking out. What should I expect? Also, does anyone have any advice like how I should prepare, what I should wear, etc.

Interviews already!?
Dress nice, and don’t worry. It’s more like a conversation than an interview. Be able to answer the question “tell me about yourself” without sounding awkward (like I did…ha). Practice your smile and handshake, just so you don’t start off on a bad note. Otherwise, just enjoy yourself. I had a lot of fun at my interview. I talked about how much I like ants. Haha.

I hate questions like that

Wow, now THERE’S an early interview.

They’re not real interviews

All of mine were just conversations

So, how did it go? Was it as scary as you thought?

The interview was not too bad, I thought I did pretty well. The only question that I completely bombed was when my interviewer asked me what I would name my mouse and I could not think of anything so I called him Bob.

To put that in perspective, a single interview question about the name of a mouse is not likely to stagger your chances of UChicago admission. And your answer wasn’t bad; Bob is as good a name as any. If your interviewer asked you the question hoping for an academic inside joke such as a Steinbeck reference, and turned away with a disappointed grimace, then the situation reflects strange expectations on their part. Depending on conversational context, though, the question seems random and meant in fun or curiosity. In a word (or a phrase)–I wouldn’t fret about it.

So, prospective class of '14, eh? You, as others above have noted, are getting a nice, early start. Did your interview take place at the university itself, or off-campus? I’m a confirmed incoming first-year, and still haven’t had the privilege of visiting (my trust in the school and its weather is so great!), so if it was the former I am jealous.

I hope your college search isn’t as dark as your username hints. Satire there?
