HELP is my common app essay topic too cliche

I know that many think that writing about race isn't recommended because it's too cliche, but my heritage happens to have the most profound effect on me in comparison to anything else in my life. However, I'm applying early decision to Columbia, and therefore want to make sure I'm not making a huge mistake with this topic.

For my common application essay I wrote about how being exposed to the brazilian mindset, or rather, the "jeito brasileiro" as I refer to it in my essay, has morphed me into the kind of person that I am today. In my essay I tell the story of when I first realized what the brazilian way was when my uncle committed suicide and I was able to witness the unconditional optimism and resilience that my family had. I then delve into describing what MY interpretation of a "way" that can be seen as stereotypical is, and how it relates to my life and my character.

Please tell me if this is too cliche!!!

maybe slightly too cliche, but if you make the subject matter intriguing and personal like you seem to have done, it somewhat counteracts the cliche. maybe try writing about something simpler (like a piece of brazilian furniture that’s been in your family for years) and bascially expound on what that simple item means to you and your cultural heritage, and how it has been a constant in your changing life. just a random idea.
