help! Issues with Common app!

argh, I really really do not like the common app. because it means that I cannot tailor my application to the specific university I am applying to which I find frustrating. Anyway I have two issues that I can determine thus far:

One page 2 (I think) it says list your current college/highschool and then further asks (as needed information) what your counsellor or advisor's information is. The problem is I am not currently enrolled in university. So I put my recent uni's name. But I did not have a counsellor or an advisor there. What do I put? Should I put the name of the prof who is giving me a reference?

Second, slightly further down the page, it says something to the effect of if you are not currently enrolled in school please give detailed explanation of what you have been up to. Do I treat this as a formal short answer essay? I sort of already have an essay written to that effect that I would like to use but I'm not sure if they just want me to list off things?

Any info someone could provide would be appreciated!! I have no around here who knows about Common App....

I'm in pretty much the same situation as you. Just put the teacher you know best as counselor, as he will be filling your sec. school report.

When I asked Brown about this, they told me to either address the issue in my essay, OR send an extra letter. I don't think they need another essay, just an objective explanation.

So I can put my uni prof then?

Address the issue in the 'why am I transferrig essay' or in the 'essay in the section'? Sorry I'm a bit slow tonight.

You can, in fact, tailor the Common App. You can send it to one school, save and "copy " it, re-open it, change it and send it to the next school and so on.

ah chedva, thank you so much. I'm really not that familiar with it so I had no idea you could submit it individually. I will investigate further. Therefore I suppose you can say 'at such and such university I will find ....' ??

Another ignorant question - if you are white does it matter if you ignore the ethnicity question? I'm not any major ethnic group so I usually just leave the section blank. Does it matter whether I leave it blank or select 'caucasian'?

.....bump!

If you leave the ethincity blank they will still guess it to be either white or Asian. Who knows what effect this will have in the minds of ADCOM gods?
