Hello!
Im filling out the ECs page of the common app and im SO confused:

Does one EC cover one activity? If i have 4 essay prizes from different competitions, do they go into ONE EC? And if one of them is from when i was in 8th grade, where do it put it? (the options are only for grades 9 thru 12).

What goes into the 'details and accomplishments' space? Do i elaborate in sentences or just provide adjectives about my work?

If i was School Cultural Captain AND House Captain, does that make 2 'student govt' ECs or am i supposed to combine it into one?

4.How many ECs is good, without being boring?

Ive been getting very confused and stressed, and i appreciate your help. Thank you so much :) And all the best!

1) You get to list 10 EC activities. If you have lots of activities, then I would “bundle” similar activities into one broader category. If you don’t have a lot of activities, then spread it out. My S has performed in or done tech for around 20 different shows at his school and various community theaters. We entered this all as one line under Theater/Drama.

For something in 8th grade, leave it off, or if you are attaching a resume under Additional Information, you may include it there.

2) In Details & Accomplishments, due to space limitations, be as descriptive as possible in as few words as you can. We used concise wording similar to descriptions used on resumes.

3) see response to #1

4) This will vary - the info says do not feel compelled to have all the rows filled. Both my D and S had more than 10 activities. They left off minor ones and only listed ones that were a big time commitment/were important to them.

If you don’t feel the format is adequate to express how you have spent your time in ECs, then upload a resume in the Additional Information section if you want to include more information/detail.
