I'm a rising junior and am interested in the following journalism schools:
Medill School of Journalism (Northwestern)
S.I. Newhouse (Syracuse)
Philip Merrill School of Journalism (University of Maryland)
School of Journalism & Mass Communications (University of North Carolina)
Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute (New York University)
College of Communications (Boston University)
Moody College of Communications (University of Texas at Austin)

Can anyone who's attended/heard first-hand about one of these schools talk about their personal experiences there. Also, if you've gone to another J-School and had a great experience, I'd also love to hear your opinion.

*Anyone who's been admitted to the schools I listed: Can you include you high school GPA and SAT/ACT scores if possible??

Those are all excellent j-schools. There’ve been threads about some of the specific schools you listed and their programs… Search for them on here. You might want to also consider the University of Missouri. They have an excellent j-school and it was the first journalism school in the US.

There’s a lot more to it than just GPA and test scores. Are you trying to narrow down your list, figure out if you want to apply to them, or…?

Thanks @CE527M !!! I’m interested in all the schools I listed because I know they’re top journalism schools in the U.S., however I know that although a school may be ranked high, everyone’s experiences are different and wanted to hear what people who attended the schools think about it, and if they would’ve gone somewhere else if they could do it again.

Also, I just wanted to know GPA and test scores to see if I could be in range to be accepted (for that part of the application) because colleges don’t report mid-range test scores for each specific school.

Also, I’m not sure what type of journalism I’d want to focus on, but I’m interested in sports journalism and know that the University of Texas at Austin has one of the top programs in the country. Are any of the other schools on my listed known for success in one specific area or are they more broad programs (like Medill)??? Thanks !

Are you genuinely interested in them? Or did you google top ranked journalism schools and then post them on here for us to tell you about them so that you don’t have to do the research yourself?

@AnnieBeats No trust me I’ve already done a lot of research and wanted to know more about whether people would’ve gone somewhere different if they had the choice or enjoyed their experiences.

I’ve been interested in Northwestern, Syracuse, and UNC for a long time (pretty much since middle school) but have just began (high school) to really look into them more. My parents want me to go to UMD because I can get tuition reimbursement since they work at UMD hospital, however, I’m not sold on it and wanted to know how people who actually went there felt about the program. I included NYU because it’s currently more of a safety/match for me than some of my top choices (reaches). Also, I had Boston U and Texas because I’m interested in sports journalism and they are two of the top programs in the country for it, but I wasn’t sure if it was worth going there instead of somewhere with a broader journalism program.

Not on your list, but the program at Oklahoma State University is regularly ranked in the top 5 of Sports Journalism schools - And their out of state tuition is reasonable for students who do well on standardized tests.

Also, don’t discount Mizzou - While it may not be ranked for ‘sports’ journalism, it is by far the best journalism school in America.

UT Austin is gonna be a reach OOS. Right now, BU is a high match. Syracuse is a high reach because Newhouse is the most selective journalism school in the country and UMD is a match becauSe you are in state. Northwestern is a high reach and so is Vanderbilt (though I don’t get why an aspiring journalist would wanna go to Vandy). NYU currently is a reach, but if you wanna be a sports journalist, I wouldn’t look there. Check out UF and UCF. They are pretty big sports schools and have solid journalism programs. They also have campus stations and papers AND you would have a pretty good shot at admissions. I wish you the best

If you can go to UMD for basically free, then you might as well just do that. Excellent j-school and you’re going to want to keep the costs down as much as possible because you won’t get rich in journalism. Starting salaries are typically ~25,000. With being right near DC, internships are right there. Go post on the UMD forum and see if there are any journalism alumni/students who can talk to you more about it.

Ok thanks @soze, I’ve been really worried because I heard that Newhouse only admits around 10% of applicants and already know that other J-schools like Medill are extremely selective.
