Help JUST lost Cal Grant A

I tried searching for topics like this and found similar ones, but I'm really really scared right now, so I had to make an account and ask. I just got an email saying I was disqualified for Cal Grant A. I received it for my fall quarter which is just about to end, but the winter quarter is coming up and for whatever reason csac retracted my grant. I just lost $12,192 annual. I believe it's because my family's assets are too high, but it's not like they've changed since I was first awarded it.

My family's income is still pretty low. It's well below 80,000. If I understood correctly, the blue and gold opportunity plan should still cover the difference that was just lost, right? I really really hope this is the case, because I'm freaking out

I hate to say it, but you need to start by contacting your school financial aid office. Print out the email, bring it in with you, and ASK THEM WHAT HAPPENED. And I’m guessing you’ll have to go in person, because my experience with state schools in CA is that you’ll never be able to get anyone by phone. I could be wrong . . . but I’d guess that you’d have better luck going in person.

Once you know what’s wrong, you’ll know what you need to do to fix it. I agree, it sucks. But at this point all you can do is take things one step at a time. Just be glad you got the email tonight and not tomorrow night (right before the weekend) - at least the financial aid office is open tomorrow.

The rule about Blue and Gold is that NOT ONLY must you have an income below $80k, but you ALSO must have financial need (after looking at assets).

So, it sounds like it’s been discovered that your family’s assets are worth too much for you to have financial need.

The first award was a mistake and you may have to pay it back.

Was the change in status because the gov’t found out about assets that weren’t reported? Or may have been under-reported (not reported for accurate value)?

No, all the information on our records are accurate and the assets reported. Yeah, the “financial need” aspect was what I was worried about. Thanks for the responses. I’m going to go inquire about this problem at the financial aid office here.

Let us know what you find out. You may be able to help someone else avoid this kind of headache in the future.

Good luck!!!

Well, I was told that I would be fine. I talked to someone in the office that told me that the University would cover the hole that was left by Cal Grant. He didn’t specify, and I forgot to ask whether or not it was, because of the blue and gold plan, but nothing’s really changed. A huge weight was taken off my shoulders to be sure.

Congratulations on the good outcome!!!
