HELP: Late Application to Swarthmore ED2...will they pardon it?

I've been working on and perfecting my application to Swarthmore for the past few weeks...and I'm still refining it, 2 days after the deadline.

I love Swarthmore College...I mean, I think its learning-centric and quirky community is perfect for who I am and what/how I may contribute. Thus my consideration of applying there ED2...but, bc I'm not the perf candidate in terms of numbers, I've been working really hard to have magnificent, blow you away kinda essays, which seems to be hurting more than helping tbh...thus my late and questionable application D:

But question is, if I submit it tomorrow (I hope it'll be ready by then, I've been up for 2 days straight working on it), is it likely that they will still consider it? Also, does being an ED applicant affect this...like does it hurt my chances of getting in, considering it's kinda contradictory that I'm applying late to a school I consider my #1? Are there any preliminary steps I should take--call the school, email, etc? How would those steps help or hurt? I'm really scared honestly, like I truly want to get into this school and I don't want my chance--the already little, teeny-weeny chance I have of getting in--to be squelched bc of an honest, but critique-able (I've had since sept ik) aim of perfection

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention they already extended the deadline…and I’m still late…so am I screwed or is there some hope?

Aww man, it’d be so great if I could get like quick, definitive messages lol…I’m freaking out, and I need to have my fears either allayed or substantiated (whereby afterwards I will just want to cry and die)…w.e the kind, I need answers for a little relief of simply knowing! Fast! Please!

Hi there!

Are you still working on your application? I would really try to get it in soon because the deadline’s passed and you don’t want them to not consider you, given that you’ve spent so much time showing who you are through your essays!

If it’s been more than 48 hours, you might want to contact them after you submit your app to give them a heads-up. They may ask for an explanation as to why your application was technically late, so be prepared to state your reasons why.

Unfortunately, there’s a chance they might not accept your ED2 application, as the supplements are expected to be in by the deadline. Has the RD deadline passed yet? If not, I would consider applying as an RD applicant instead–that way you can perfect your application even more without having to worry about the repercussions of being late.

I hope everything works out. Good luck!

Wow . . . and how are you going to deal with deadlines in college and later in life? Just ignore them because they don’t suit your personal work schedule? I can guarantee you that, in most situations, that’s not going to fly.

As for this deadline:

(1) submit the app (if the Common App will even allow it to be submitted after the deadline); and
(2) contact Swarthmore (by phone and email), explain that you missed the deadline, and ask if your app can still be considered for ED2 or if, in the alternative, they might be willing to consider it for RD.

At least that way, you’re giving them the option of saying “no” to ED2 (as a consequence for being late), while still allowing you to apply. If I were the one making the decision, I might find that a reasonable solution.

I hate to be the downer, but a school like Swat is selective enough that when you hand them a reason to weed an application out, they’ll usually take it. Unless your reason for being late is that your house burned down, it sounds like you need to work on your time management skills. How many of your college papers will be late while you ‘perfect’ them?

Everyone else under consideration got their applications in on time. Is there a compelling reason you should be given special treatment compared to the rest of the applicant pool?

I’m going to not be a downer and say that Swat is usually pretty relaxed about admissions deadlines. If you make it clear there is a reason I don’t think it should hurt.
