HELP!! Late reply to interview email from alum!

Ok so I got an email from an alumni about one and a half week ago, but I never noticed it in my inbox! I was going through my mail today and it turns out it was in my spam mail, and he wanted the interview to be TODAY.

What do I do?? I really don't want to screw this up, but I'm afraid I already did. Should I email back the alumni, apologizing for the late response and requesting to reschedule the interview? Or do I ignore it and wait to see if someone will send me another email for an interview? I am really nervous and scared and I don't know what to do..please help!

P.S. If I do reply back apologizing, how do I word the email?? Do i give an excuse or would that make me seem like a student that isn't Harvard material? I am so flustered..I just don't want to make a bad first impression..but I'm afraid I already did. What do I do??

Mistakes happen. Contact him and apologize, explaining the situation. This is the best way to mitigate this situation. B ut know that interviews mean almost nothing for most applicants.

Definitely contact him. If you ignore the email, then you’ll seem like an unreachable person. Besides, the holiday season just finished so there are a lot of people who will be responding late. Good luck!

The same thing happened to me. My inbox was flooded with messages, and I missed my interviewer’s. I apologized, and he honestly did not care at all or hold it against me.
