Does legacy only boost the chances of ED applicants?
Or could it help RD applicants?
(I’m hesitant about ED for all the usual reasons people are hesitant about ED)

It’ll help you either way but don’t expect it to get you in

We visited campus last year and asked this ques. In 1996, when my older dau was applying, the accept rate for legacies was 50%. She grad 2nd in her class and had 1590 SATs, so she was a powerful candidate anyway without being a legacy.

Last fall we were told that the current legacy accept rate is 36% and that the only way it makes a diff today is if “all other things are equal” between two applicants, the legacy status would push one of them into the Yes box.

I personally think that if you are from one of those families who marches in the Commencement Procession with a banner that lists a dozen different graduation years over 8 decades, you won’t have a problem! But if it’s just one or two parents, you’d best be very very strong.
