Help! Looking for more college

Hello all, I'm a rising senior. Like other out there, I'm busy rummaging through nooks and crannies looking for the best college for me.

Oberlin College and Wesleyan University really attract me ( Wesleyan being my highest bid ) An independent feel in a liberal school is the kind of athmoshphere I'm targeting. I'm also interested in the "helping the world" and " changing the world " notion.
Although I would love to apply either these two schools, I can't. I want to major in International Relations and Affair, but neither schools offer this major.
Are there any other schools out there that are similar to Oberlin and Wesleyan that offer International Affair? The closer to Boston the better.
Thank you!

Brown, for sure. Huge cross-applicant pool with both, especially Wesleyan.

Err…Brown would be over the top for me.
I mean, I would love to pick such a prestigious school, but according to my SAT scores and GPA ( a 3.8 =[ ) Brown would shut my application so fast before I could even say the word tiger.
Wesleyan was the farthest I could go, seeing that both my parents and I have empty wallets.
But thank you for the advice though!

According to the Oberlin website they offer International Studies in the Politics department. I’d be surprised if you couldn’t get whatever it is you want to study at either school.

Bard is good in international studies. Also Tufts. Also Macalester.

Well I can name many public universities, but it seems like you have interest in liberal art colleges and private universities ( I myself plan to major in international relations, along with a minor in economics). I’m still looking into more liberal art colleges myself, though so far Kalamazoo College comes to thought, heard it ranks top in sending students study abroad… still looking more into it. As for private universities ( not speaking of Ivy Leagues either), you may want to look into Georgetown University, George Washington University and if you want to attend a religous school I heard American University is also well.
Publics really range, and will just list a few by it’s region,
West: Univeristy of Washington- Seattle, University of California- Los Angeles
Midwest:
Michigan State University ( espeically James Madison College)
University of Michigan- Ann Arbor
University of Wisconsin- Madison
University of Minnesota- Twin Cities
University of Iowa
University of Illinios- Urbana Champaign
Northeast:
Pennslyvania State University- University Park
South:
University of Texas- Austin
Texas A&M University ( spelled somewhat like that)

For a different spin on International Relations and changing the world, check out Earlham’s Peace and Global Studies program.
[Earlham College | Curriculum Guide | PAGS](http://www.earlham.edu/curriculumguide/pags/)

Earlham is much less selective than Wesleyan. And it’s far from Boston. But it might be a good safety for you. I believe they give some good merit scholarships, too.

Thank you all for the reply!
I am more interested in a private education, even if I know I don’t have the money to splurge. Oh well.
@ qialah:
I was considering Bard a lot. The only downside is that it’s pretty far.
@ coolbrezze:
Kalamazoo doesn’t so bad either and thank you for the list of public school. Just like Bard, Kalamazoo is a tad far.

I may be wrong, but I think Macalester as come up as a place for IR. Or maybe that’s just my bias knowing someone who studied that there…

Tufts would fit and is just outside Boston. Elon if you want to look south.

@ ncmentor:
Tufts! Yes Tufts had been on my list since Freshman year. I truly want to go there, but I’m scared my SAT scores would let me down.
( Actually, I pretty much gave up on the SAT, I took the ACT instead and got a decent score.) I’ll try it anyways this fall, and cross my fingers.
Also, ould it help if I post more information ( academic, point of interest, and EC wise?) There seem to be a gap that I need to fill in, and I’m pretty new here.
Thank you all!

Yes post your info if you want people to help more. Take a look at some of the “chance me” threads

You really should check out Earlham. They are very strong on anything international, liberal vibe, very intentional about service/justice. Their tag line is “Engaging a Changing World.”

Their admission rate is pretty high, but IMO that may be because their applicants are self-selecting, and not an indicator of academic inferiority. It flies under the radar of name-recognition, but it has one of the highest rates in the country of grads who go on to get PhDs.

a 3.8 is not as horrible as you are making it out to be. what are the rest of your stats?

If you like Oberlin and Wesleyan, go for those.

Oberlin has plenty of courses in its Politics major that focus on international affairs, and as one who has a PhD in the IR, you’d do well to focus on politics more generally, anyway. Plus Oberlin has other complementary departments that will help train your brain for a career in international relations (if that’s your goal).

Similarly, Wesleyan’s department of government has a concentration in IR, and plenty of courses that will support your academic interests.

You need to look beyond the title of the major and find out what courses the colleges offer. If you like Oberlin and Wesleyan for other reasons, don’t just axe them because they are not using the same vocabularly you are using in your search.

Dig! (Or perhaps get some help as you dig…)

Thank you for the advice. I really didn’t know that college searching could have such a wide scope. I’ll heed your advice well and dig some more.
Thanks to you, and others another door had opened for me to look at.
Now I could breathe easier. Thank you.

You might want to post your stats in a “chance me” type post.

A few more things that colleges will be looking at, so you should post are, unweighed GPA, your full SAT breakdown, race, state you live in now, are you a resident of that state, do you expect to be a full pay student or will you need help with funds.

You did not post enough info in your first post so I think it’s time to start over because much of what has been posted here was based on comparing your desires to Oberlin and Wesleyan. I think you will get different, more accurate and more helpful info by posting everything.

Clark University in Worcester, Mass. has several programs dealing with international affairs-type stuff…Peace Studies, Geography, International Development, and this one: [Welcome | International Studies Stream | Clark University](http://www.clarku.edu/departments/iss/)
