Hi!!

I am currently a junior at my high school and will be graduating next year! I am super nervous for the entire college application process and future rejections! haha

I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me out!! I am just wondering where I should be thinking of applying to with my grades and activities...!

Here are my stats:

I have a 3.49 gpa unweighted(i know it is pretty low but I have a personal reason for this and plan to write about it in my application).
Also, my weighted gpa is 4.2

ACT: 25 (first) 34 (second)

My activities consist of the following:
Scientific Research for 3 years
-honorable mention last year
-placed 1st within my division this year

Webpage productions (this is basically programming our school website) for 4 years
Freshmen year I earned the title of News Editor
Sophomore year I became the Assistant Editor in Chief
Junior year I am the Editor in Chief and will be senior year as well.

Girls' Golf
Freshmen year: Junior Varsity
Sophomore, Junior, and Senior year: Varsity
Senior year: Team Captain

Part of a science academy in Southern California -earned Honorable mention at annual meeting

Volunteering at a local hospital

Founder and President of Letters of Hope and Encouragement

Part of Science National Honors Society and History National Honors Society

Thank you so much in advance!! (:

Need some more information before I can make suggestions. Major? Large or small university? Private, Public or Religious? In-state or OOS? How much can you and parents afford?

I would really like to take the pre-med track if possible! I do not particularly mind if it is a large or small private of public university. I do not think I will be applying to any religious schools. I am planning to apply to both in state and out of state, and my parents are planning to pay my all of my tuition (Thank you!) .

I would also like to add that my gpa got low due to the amount of AP and honors courses I was enrolled in. Starting from Sophomore year, I always have taken 7-8 classes a semester.

What state is in-state for you? California?

You need to calculate your weighted CSU/UC GPA before apply to any in-state UC’s. You only get 8 extra points (4 year long or 8 semesters) of AP Credit for 10-11. Your ACT score is great but you would need to be close to a 4.0 UC GPA for any mid-tier UC’s to be a match. Low Reaches maybe UCLA/UCB/UCSD but you would definitely have to address the low GPA in one of your essays but taking a very rigorous schedule is really not an excuse. The UC’s are more focused on GPA vs. Test Scores.
Some good privates would be USD, Biola, Pepperdine, LMU, Santa Clara and the Claremont Colleges. It is best look up the common data set for each school to see how you compare.

If you are interested in OOS the following link is for the Western Undergraduate Exchange, where you get reduced tuition from the participating schools:<a href=“Save On College Tuition | Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)”>http://wiche.edu/wue
I would highly recommend to visit many of the universities this summer to narrow down your list. You have many possibilities and I would suggest you try CC’s College Match to help.

Wow! Thank you so much! You do not think that UCLA, UC (Berkeley?), and UCSD are reaches? I feel that my GPA is way too low for those schools…

Also, what would you consider Occidental College?

UCSD/UCLA/UCB are low reach/reaches depending upon how you address your low GPA. I think Occidential may be a High Match. Again you need to have a balanced list with at least 2 safeties, 3-4 matches and some reaches. Do not make the mistake and apply to all reaches and get shut out. Look at the common data sets for each university to see where you stand. You want to be in the 75% or above for a safety, at least 50% for a match school.
