HELP!!! Math 1B pass/no pass?

I got an 80 on my first midterm in math 1B with Reshetikhin. The average was about a 77. I slacked off wayyy too much and got a 32...on my last midterm. The average for this midterm was 66.75, the median 69, and the standard deviation 18.37. I've been doing great on our quizzes.

* 25% for 12 quizzes (held in discussion sessions on Tuesdays) based rather closely on the h/w problem sets.
* 20% for each of two midterms (2/12 and 3/17, during normal class hours in the lecture room 2050 LSB).
* 35% for the final exam (5/11, 3-6pm).

Should I take this class pass/no pass? given...I literally just failed my midterm? I'm pre-haas and I don't want it to affect my GPA. I doubt I can get an A...

fml.

Wow i was exactly in the same place as you. Pre-business, did fine on the first midterm, failed the second, then made it pass/no pass.

Except I had a 5 on Calc BC so it didn’t matter anyway. I wouldn’t have done that otherwise.

I took math 1a first semester and did fine. I technically don’t need this class for Haas but I just want to keep my options open.

What did you end up getting in the class?

talk to him, maybe make a deal with him or something lol.

my sister was getting a C in one of her MCB classes at UCLA a few years back. she talked to her professor, who told her that if she got a 100% on the Final he would give her an A in the class. she got the 100% and the A. :)

This is a weeder class, it’s expected that you might not do as well as you expected. People who studied also did poorly…I would say make it p/np if you are seriously thinking about going for haas, but for other majors I think you have to take it for a letter grade. Consider what is important to you and what you really want to do.

Btw, how did you find the scores? I’ve looked everywhere but there isn’t a score/assignment slot on bspace…

like a B i didn’t think it would be curved that much, but it would have still hurt my gpa so I’m glad i did it.

I would stick with the class, you need it for if you want to do econ as a backup/double major

Damn, thats really generous

our scores are already posted on the bspace gradebook. it’s under the math 1b discussion tab, not the lecture

Holy cow, this makes me even more worried. I have Persson and our 2nd midterm is coming up.

You do realize upwards of 50% of the students who take Math 1B in the spring semesters end up failing?

Attempting an A in this class at this point is insanity. Be happy if you get higher than a C.

Upwards of 50%?? really?

So glad I’m taking it with Aganagic…

But don’t pre-Haas have the option of taking 16B OR 1B…?

In past spring semesters, it has been known to have been that high. Might not be as bad now, but I do know it was pretty ridiculous in the past. Math 1B makes other weeders look like minor contrivances.

Yeah but 1b gives you better flexibility

okay. im a senior in high school and have taken 14 colleges classes including calculus 2 and i got a B- in that class. i think this class sounds like its the same but the grading style almost matches mine. im trying to decide whether to go to UCB or not and it seems like its hard for everyone. does this affect grad school admissions or do they know its hard and grades are gonna be relatively lower than say…northwestern, whose grades are inflated?

OP - I don’t think the average for the first midterm was 77. It was 83. He said that in class. Not that it helps your case.

and can you actually change it to p/np this late?

The deadline to change it is April 2nd

I am an engineering major, and anyone know if it is okay for engineering student to take math 1b as p/np? I might get a B in the class…and i don’t want my gpa to go down that much.

I can take it during college for summer credit in community college, but i heard that you must take all technical course for a letter grade.

In my case, is it okay to take just math1b in community college and get p for math at berkeley? anyone know?

i plan on taking math 1b during the summer, i got a 5 on calc AB, but im still scared…is it even remotely possible for me to do well in that class?

^ ok if you got a 5 on calc BC, DO NOT TAKE MATH 1B. the material is the same, the tests are killer.

if you got a 5 on calc bc, you know enough to go to higher math classes like 53 and 54. just because you don’t think you remember everything from bc does not mean you should take math 1b.
