Help Me Choose A College!

why no ivies?

Who me? LOL. I am an average student, not amazing as compared to some people on CC. I am proud of what I have accomplished so far. Any more opinions?

You stated:
University of NH
TOTAL- $18,900
ESTIMATED COST OF ATTENDANCE-$33,213

REMAINING- $12,223

Isn't the remaining cost actually several thousand dollars higher at $14,313?
( $ 33,213-18,900= $14,313)

UNH and UMass are most affordable. I am more familar with UNH and know of many top instate students choosing UNH for engineering over Northeastern and other privates. Remember Northeastern with the Coop program can be a five year program. That may be fine if you get a terrific internship - but that does not always happen.

yeah, i just hurried a bit too much. sorry. thanks a lot.

You should look seriously at UNH because of its earth, ocean, space grant. New engineering building as well as incredible undergrad research opportunities including $6000 grant program for undergrads to conduct research projects abroad - known as IROP (International Research Opportunity Program). Similar programs are in place for student research in the US as well. Also, students can sign up for an INCO course that pairs students with faculty to work on a research project and a $200 stipend comes with the course to cover expenses costs the student may incur. I know of no other school that has that level of generous funding for these experiences. The IROPs, etc are competitive but not unrealistically so and if you know of these experiences early, you can begin talking with faculty from day one about making these things happen. Good luck wth your choice, they are all great schools.

Thanks momgeh50. That was really detailed. Anyone else?

Any housing issues anywhere? Like if you wait til May 1 to send in your deposit you may not get housing or could be in supplemental? That could drive your visiting schedule, visit those first to get them out of the way and know if they are even still in consideration.

The honors college at UMass is a big deal. Small classes at a large university are a real plus. Access to faculty and research is more easily facilitated through the honors college, with research subsidies up to $1,000. For the majors you mentioned, all three UMass programs have top rankings. Engineering is highly ranked, especially computer science and chemical. Their facilities are top notch ... have you taken a tour of them? Biology is ranked one of top 25 programs in the country (Science Watch magazine). Astronomy is the only program offered in the New England States, so all states send their astronomy students to UMass Amherst. It has observatories in Massachusetts, Arizona, and Mexico.

Of UNH and UMass, it looks like your best deal may be Umass, re:

UNH UMass

Grants & Incentive 9750 9712
Loans 5500 5100

I've heard great things about UNH from kids who applied out of state. I don't know anything about UMass, other than one girl from our neighborhood plays basketball there! (She's not an extraordinary student, though.)

Wow! Looks like most of the people are voting for UMass-Amherst. Thanks, for all the replies, anymore?

Any more help would be appreciated! Sorry for bumping so much.

Any one else? Please!?

I am a big fan of co-op programs, and (depending on major) engineering is one field where taking on some debt as an undergrad MIGHT make sense. That keeps NU in the running from my perspective. HOWEVER, you said you were undecided on major, and astronomy and bio means graduate school (likely full-time). Getting into an honors program is a big deal. And you have more options at U Mass if you really decide to change majors.

I would go visit U-Mass, UNH, and Northeastern (and maybe let the finaid office at NU know it's between them and U-M honors). Shadow an engineering, bio, or astronomy major for a few classes, maybe stay in the dorms overnight. If NU is still too pricey, then rule it out and follow your gut on the decision. Good luck!

Why did you decide to rule out UD and UConn. Northeastern seems too expensive, it would be around 30,000 a year meaning I would leave college 120,000 in debt. And I might want to go to grad school and that would be even worse. Is the UMass Honors program higly regarded?

UMass overall is probably the most reputable on your list, at least where I live.

This is not what you are going to want to hear but I say none of the above because the amount of debt you will be graudating with is not worth it.

for example the school with the least amount of gap (not covered by FA) is UMass- Amherst honors

Off the bat you are talking about coming up with $47,384 (11,846 *4) the best way you can. This amount does not even consider that your tuition will increase approximately 5% each year.

Stafford loans -we are talking about 19,000 in loans based on doing 4 years (3500+4500+5500+5500). What happens if you don't graduate in 4 years? Add another 5500 in loans each year.

Perkins loans - at minimum 6400 (1600*4)

We are talking about potential debt of 72,784

if repaid over the course of 10 years at 6.5% we are talking monthly loan payments of $837/per month and an annual salary of ~125k to support your debt.

http://www.mapping-your-future.org/apps/debtwizard/

I would suggest running your own numbers to see how this spending (even though educational debt is suppose to be good debt but too much will limit your future).

good luck.

Sybbie, thanks for that detailed response. Keep in mind my parents will pay around $7,000 a year. That would amount to $28,000 so 72,784 -28,000 is 44,784.

If this is the route you plan on choosing, please also consider things like becoming a RA. Find out what the application process is at your school as you could problably get free room (at some schools it is free room & board), which help reduce some of your expenses.

Thanks a lot. I will look into that. If you had to choose one or two of the schools which one would you choose?

For UMASS, he RA position is valued at $7,010, to UDel's which is $3,370. UNH states "all RAs will receive a single room on campus and a silver meal plan." so im guessing that eliminates room and board.
