Well i want to be a journalist and a book writer. What schools in california especially but i am fine with going out of state would be good for me? I do not want to go to a womens college and i want to go to a school were there are a lot of people in it. Also what would be a good major for me besides journalism?

University of Missouri-Columbia is great for journalism! It's one of the best journalism schools in the country, and MU is a big school.

Creative Writing would be another good major for you. Or even English.

USC is really strong for journalism, and UCLA isn't bad either. Chapman could also be good, if you're interested in broadcast journalism (which I think they offer). If you want to stay relatively close, Arizona also has one of the best college newspapers in the country.

Outside the west coast, Missouri is good, along with Syracuse, UNC Chapel Hill, Northwestern, Ithaca, American, Emerson, etc.

If you want to go the creative writing/English route (which may actually be better, as it's less competitive), that's a whole different story. The Claremont colleges offer good English programs, along with most east-coast LACs. Then UIowa has a world-famous creative writing program.

bump bump bump

There are a ton of posts discussing Communication/journalism schools
ill list a few:

South:
- Tulane
- Umaimi
- Missouri
Midwest:
- Ohio
- Indiana
- UChicago
North:
- UVA
- BU
- NYU

West: Not really sure but here are some:
- USC
- UCLA
- WashingtonU

Missouri is in the midwest :)

acarta.... UChicago doesn't offer a communications or journalism major. That's not to say that Chicagoans don't go on in those fields.... are you sure you weren't thinking of U. Illinois-Chicago, Northwestern, or UIUC?

Well to begin with, please excuse my geographic miscalculations :)
Missouri is in fact in the midwest :P

And yes I got confused between Northwestern or CHicago. I know one of those had a good program.

many journalists who write for major publications such as time, wsj, etc. are usually english majors; in fact a journalism major may not be the best route if you want to go into the more writing-intensive sections of journalism.

Although, UM-Columbia and Northwestern have the best journalism schools in the nation, I don't recommend going to an undergrad journalism school because you'll go farther if you pursue journalism on the graduate level.

A degree in English or creative writing is excellent for journalism graduate school like Columbia.

West Coast:
USC
University of Oregon
UC Berkeley

Midwest:
Northwestern
University of Missouri Columbia
University of Iowa (great creative writing program)
Indiana University
University of Wisconsin

East:
Syracuse
Columbia
University of Maryland College Park

South:
University of Florida

UIowa's cw program is a grad school program-- has nothing to do with ug. Same with Columbia's journalism program. (This was at least true when I considered both schools).

UNorth Carolina has a great journalism program but it is very large which you said you didnt like. Amherst, Davidson, Yale, William & Mary are all much smaller and have great English depts that can get you to a great writing job in the future.
