That GPA is a combo. That’s why I want to add more clear matches or even safeties. I think he has a good chance at Goucher and maybe even Bard. I dont want him to send in more than 12 simply due to cost of applying and time. But we are open to removing some from the list. Personally I want to remove swarthmore but my ex is insistent he apply since they visited.
Just found out that Temple has a competitive bowling team. He’s gonna LOVE THAT!!
Does Temple offer a lot of merit aid?
I’d reconsider the application to Middlebury. A school I like, but his ACT is below the 25th% (31.5) and it’s nowhere near a major city. The closest, Montreal, is 2 1/2 hours away + extra time at the border. Burlington VT is a great smaller city, but even that’s almost an hour away.
A possible match school is Wheaton, in Norton MA. Suburban, but about 40 minutes from Providence RI and 1 1/2 hrs. from Boston. Good academic support. A friend’s smart but very ADD son graduated recently and a homeschooler I’m a big fan of is a happy freshman. Possibility of a merit scholarship. Not to be confused with the religious Wheaton in IL.
I think Wheaton would be a safety for this student. And he’d get excellent merit aid. It’s very small.
Make sure you apply to several Florida schools to make use of the excellent FA (BF, local scholarships). It sounds like your FAFSA/CSS are going to be a little iffy because of the tax years involved (if you were married).
What about Temple? Seems like it would be a solid Match. Maybe bigger than what you’re looking for.
My homeschooled dd was accepted there.
oops, sorry for the double post!
Thank you. Will definitely look.
We will definitely consider it.
How about American University? Their NPC isn’t an accurate one but they are a needs meet school.
I like a few from your list as reasonable opportunities, most will be challenging.
In New England, specifically for a laid back kid. Some of the smaller catholic schools would be great safety/matches and very chill communities. Also they have excellent reputations.
Stonehill Easton Ma
Salve Regina Newport RI
St Anselm Bedford NH
Fairfield. Fairfield CT
Assumption. Worcester Ma
Holy Cross which I think is now test optional in the reachier category.
No idea on net price.
And he is correct. The 29 is like a 1350ish SAT.
Good luck. He sounds like a nice kid and these are inviting communities and many are really nice campuses.
If you think Rochester would be too cold (17.3.°, on average, on January mornings), note that Middlebury’s temperatures land quite a bit colder (8.8° on January mornings).
(Sperling’s data.)
I like the Wheaton (MA) idea as a high safety/low match option. Holy Cross too as a high match/low reach.
How about Beloit? I know it’s in a small town and in the midwest, but if DS can get over that it might be a fit. It’s so hard when you have a child who is not really acknowledging “reality”. He’s a good student, smart, but lacks some study skills and i think will need some support the first year.
trust me, i know. I don’t want him to apply to Middlebury. But his father (my ex) insists since they spent the time to visit. I wasn’t in charge of where they went on college visits and my choices would have been MUCH different. Father went to Columbia (I went to Yale) and he somehow thinks DS will have a chance at these reach schools. I know better.
Is the father proposing Columbia ED? Would he pay? Legacy ED app to very high reach ?
No. And no, he won’t and can’t pay. As I mentioned, we have money saved in a 529 which my mom contributed to when he was very young, but it’s only enough for a year and a half of full pay. Since we are divorced, and I earn little and am the custodial parent, I am looking for schools that either only use the FAFSA or do not require a css from the father.
He would not get into Columbia. I told him once he has finished his other applications, IF he wants to submit to COlumbia he can, but he must pay for the application.
I know you don’t need more reaches, but if a name brand is important to him what about Brandeis as a high match/low reach? Close to Boston, around 3,600 undergrads, a lot of smart kids but an easier admit than some of the reaches on his current list. The commuter rail runs right from the edge of campus to Cambridge and Boston.
Thanks. I will take a look at Brandeis.
