I’m somewhat serious about my studies and am planning to double major in molecular biology and computer science and want to be around people with like minded goals. I also smoke weed, mostly because it helps me focus and relax. I originally thought about going to crown, but I don’t want to be around a bunch of straight edge-prudes that don’t ever party or have fun. Is crown really as dry as many people above have said?

Ahahaha. Straight edged prudes. My dorm building last year stank of weed at least once every week. And I didn’t even go looking for it. People were just smoking it up that much. I think sci/eng need it even more because of the stress of the major.

Oh, and one of my roommates had a roommate freshmen year who was dealing in drugs far more potent than pot. So uh. Yeah. Every college gets all types.

do any of the dorms (or Kresge apartments) have air conditioning? If not do you need a fan?

heres me…
- Go to the gym at least 4 days a week.
- Social smoker (don’t smoke tobacco though)
- I’m 21 so ya I drink, but not as hard as when i was in high school.
- Not really into computers, video games, and/or fantasy whatevers.
- Very friendly and outgoing, not shy whatsoever.
- Down for anything.

any suggestions…

@SimplyComplex I would say that Cowell/Stevenson would be the perfect match for you. They’re closest to the gym and the people tend to fit your social wants. They also have a pretty decent party scene from what I know.

@magik510 cool. is there a party scene i heard on campus parties are rare and how are is c10 and c9 from the gym because i dont want to be right next to the gym

@SimplyComplex There is a party scene but it is not obvious. You need to know the right people and groups. From what I hear the off-campus party scene is more prevalent. College 9/10 are also fairly close to the gym, being in the center of the campus means that everything is not too far from reach.

i dont want to sound shallow or sexists, but are there stereotypes for girls at the various colleges or is it pretty diverse. As far as race/ethnicity dont really care but just want to be around social and outgoing people versus introverted and shy.

There aren’t any girl-specific stereotypes that I know if.

Cowell/Stevenson are still a good ways from the gym, maybe a 5 minute walk. Definitely not right next door.

Could someone please tell me which is the best college for a science nerd who loves board games but isn’t interested in video games? I know it’s Crown vs. Merrill, but any further insight?

I got admitted to UCSC for Bussiness Management Economics , I wanted to know where I would fit in the colleges.

1) I like video games and into tech stuff.
2) I dance as in a dance crew.
3)I am into hype clothing like stussy, diamond supply, black scale
4) I love listening to hip hop/ r &b
5) I party at times
6) I am a social person and good with any kind of people
7) I am laid back but when it comes to studying I am usually On top of things

I have been thinking about Crown, Cowell , and 9.

Can anybody suggest where would I belong?

I’m a 23-year old transfer student majoring in math with a minor in chemistry. I, like everyone else in here, want to know which college I should associate myself with. I was told that since transfers tend to live in Porter in the Transfer Community, it is easier to affiliate with Porter. However, I do like the idea of Crown. About me:

1) I am a nerd, but not really a geek (I like science/math, but not a science fiction geek).
2) I am a huge metalhead. I listen to death metal, black metal, folk metal, thrash metal, and progressive metal. I hate rap/hip hop and most pop. I can “tolerate” a lot of music, but I’d really rather not be blasted with sty generic hip hop. I do like some electronic music, but I do prefer metal.
3) I’m not a hippy, hipster, preppy, artsy (though I like some art, preferably gothic in nature), religious, jock, stoner, or huge partier, but I do like to drink (love beer). I will smoke weed on occasion, but it’s not a daily activity. I did the big stoner/drinker thing when I was 19, I’m over it now.
4) 90% of my clothes are black and 95% of my t-shirts are metal band shirts.
5) I guess I could be described as a nerdy metal goth. No I don’t wear black makeup, but very few true goths do.
6) I have ADHD and get distracted easily. I was told by a friend that Porter is kind of a crazy party place. Idk if that’s the same in the transfer halls.
7) Being that I am 23, I am fairly mature and am done with the high school/18-20 year old drama bs***.
8) I’m very liberal so I know politically I will fit right in at UCSC.
9) I love to bike, snowboard, and skateboard.
10) I do love to play videogames, I know Crown does have a gaming area, but I don’t want to get distracted with that being in my building. Would I be able to go up there to hang out if I want?
11) I don’t like stupid people, but as this is a UC, I doubt I’ll find too many of them around.

So any suggestions for a 23-year old nerdy metal goth? I know some of what I said may make it seem like this is the wrong school for me, but I’m pretty easygoing and tend to get along with many people. I’d love to meet a metal/goth chick, but I’m guessing they will be a very few and far between. I only saw 2 when I went down last Friday for Spring Spotlight.

I think you would enjoy crown/merrill better compared to porter

My son has not spent time getting to know the personalities of the various colleges. He’s holding out hope for a positive answer to his FA appeal at a private school. Thinking about his other options just makes him more anxious about the appeal. I, on the other hand, know that he needs a back up and that UCSC is probably his best option should the private college not come through with more aid. Because he’ll be making this decision at the very last minute, I’d like to gather the information he’ll need if he ends up choosing UCSC.

So…which college(s) would you suggest for a student who:

plans to major in Environmental Science

doesn’t smoke or drink (he is not judgmental about it – plenty of his friends do) He’d be happiest someplace where getting high was not a litmus test for social acceptance.

likes to work out

loves baseball (watching and playing)

is serious about school, though he is not a whiz kid/nerd

is most comfortable in a ethnically/racially diverse setting (though he is white)

needs quiet when he studies

thinks white folks with dreadlocks are silly

enjoys movies, video games, and music, but is not obsessed by them

would rather not have to trek too far to get to his classes (I think the size of the campus is the main reason that UCSC is his second choice)

Hi I was wondering if someone could help me out with choosing a college. From what I’ve heard I’m interested in College 9/10 and Cowell
Here’s a little bit about me

-I’m asian but was born in California
-I play computer games
-Love to draw, paint, do digital media
-Read during my free time
-love to snowboard, run, surf, (attempting to do gymnastic and parkour)
-likes electronic music, rap, indie, folk, rock
-Doesn’t do drugs, drink, party (I can deal with it if it’s not to insane)
-Some people do call me a nerd, and I’m fine with that but I don’t want to be surrounded by people who are socially awkward etc.
-planning on majoring in computer engineering and minoring (or majoring) in fine art.

So basically I’m just looking for a college that I will fit in. I’m not a big fan of those snobby rich asian kid. But I do want to be around at least some asians I like how 9 has asians there and mural projects but what kinda bummed me out was I heard you get less of the community feel because of the lack of a quad. Also I heard that a lot of Fobs attend 9/10 and although I like fobs I don’t want to be like surrounded by them (not being racist here)

So what do you guys suggest should I just go to 9/10 or Cowell? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated C:

Oh also from what I heard, Oaks seem like a pretty good place to attend. So ya there’s that. (sorry for the double post)

what’s a good college for me? I’m a transfer so my first semester will be at porter
-21 years old
-goes to gym about 3-4 times a week
-not shy at all, and not to try new things
-I love the beach but I hate the ocean. my cousin almost drown me numerous times when we were little. so no surfing crowd for me. I like playing sports though, but i’m not very good at most.
-social drinker and smoker.
-want to make lots of social friends so i can get to know those “right people” to find parties.
- from los angeles
- I play video games maybe an hour or 2 a week, not very into it but like playing it.

I was thinking cowell/stevenson but I haven’t really been there so I’m asking you veterans :P

just wanted to add this for people considering cowell.
the views are spectacular, you can see the city of Santa Cruz in the distance, and it overlooks the green field as well.

the dorms, however, are pathetic. I saw the triple, and theres a really small cramped hallway and the rooms are nothing great. it’s all old lock and key nothing modern, but keep in mind it is the original college of ucsc. Really needs a renovation though.
