I’m currently deciding between UMich and WashU to attend next year. I am super conflicted and honestly don’t know where to go. When I compare the two, WashU seems like the better choice: it is less money, it is a better school for Neuroscience, it is a smaller campus, and it has a blend of city and suburban life. But everytime I consider hitting the commit button, I hesitate. I have always loved UMich and their school spirit, and I feel like I won’t get a true college experience if I go to WashU.
Current students of either school I would love your opinion. Thank you in advance!!!
Go to WUSTL if cost differences are large. I have no idea what twice as much means exactly. If one costs $2,000 out of pocket and the other $4,000 for example, then the difference is not a big deal.
WUSTL and Michigan are probably just about even in terms of academics.
Then the question is: Is Michigan’s much better sports scene worth twice as much money?
I wouldn’t think so. Wash U might be D3, but you could still go to the games and cheer for the team. St. Louis has plenty to offer in terms of good food and things to do, and you could go to Blues and Cardinals games for high-level sports excitement.
Wash U also is known for having great housing and food.
Do you define a true college experience as “big time sports?” If so, WUSTL doesn’t have that. You will have fun there, but it won’t be in a packed division I stadium.
How much of the extra cost for Michigan will be loans, though?
Agree with Prezbucky – WashU’s Div 3 sports are quite good and very competitive among their peers. It is fun to know the students who are actually competing – typically you will sit next to them in class. Our Student is a huge hockey and baseball fan so Blues and Cards are their cup of tea – and St. Louis is a great sports town.
