Hello College Confidential, glad to be on this rockin site.

To start off, i am near graduating my community college (sigh), and Georgia has a list of transfer admission guarantee with several Universities. I wanted some opinions from people here for the school i will list. My goal is to pick the best school out of the ones they offer. If i do choose an out of state (Georgia) i will most likely take online classes (fingers crossed if possible) to avoid moving (full time job here, well paying, no rent), if not, i wont mind staying in Georgia.

Major:Political Science/Public Policy
GPA: 3.3
Goal:Law school

My choices from the "TAG" schools:

Syracuse Univ.
Georgia Institute of Technology
Georgia State University
Auburn University
Oglethorpe University
University of West Georgia
University of Louisville
Tennessee State University
Morehouse College

All thoughts and opinions welcomed!

Also, i know Moorehouse is a traditional AA school (which would make me a minority there), but none the less Ive heard great things about their programs which is why i bothered mentioning it.

What would your major be at Georgia Tech? If you’re not a science major now, could you still go there (I believe they require all transfers to have at least B in Calculus I, II, III, plus Physics and Chemistry)? I assume you’d be going for one of the Business majors but do check specific pre-reqs in addition to the TAG.
Morehouse would be a great choice actually. Next choice would be Georgia State.
Since you can’t move, don’t choose schools out of state. I’m not sure how it’d be viewed by Law Schools that you took your major courses online (and I’m not sure it’s possible, frankly, to complete 2 years totally online. Most majors have specialized classes that aren’t offered online.)

Georgia tech does have a political science program as well as a public policy program. My main reason for considering tech is because it’s known nationwide as being a good school all around, despite my major having nothing to do with mathematics or engineering. Would love to hear more opinions!

Yes it does, but based on what I know, it requires a heavy dose of math and science from all its transfers regardless of chosen majors, so you should investigate just to make sure that the TAG doesn’t have a small print clause like “as long as they’ve taken calculus and physics and got B’s or better”.
You’re right, it’s a very good school, and the public policy program is excellent :)

Very solid advice from a senior member! ;)

So with the given choices, how would you personally rank the schools I’ve chosen?

I checked and as long as you have 2 sciences with labs and either Calc I&II OR Finite Math and Survey of Calculus, you’re fine for Public Policy.

If you exceed their requirements, I’d place GT first, then Morehouse and GA State second and third (either in that order or the reverse, depending on personal criteria).

Just an update, life took a detour, and im still finishing up at my CC. I did look into GA tech, and scratched off my list because of its heavy dose of calculus requirements. Still reviewing schools for my future major unfortunately. Any one out there? :)

Are you still looking to stay in-state? Any budgetary constraints? Has your GPA changed?

Crazy to pay for an OOS public if taking online classes.

Do you qualify for HOPE?

Yup, GPA still same, Im still looking in state because of my full time job. Unless there is an institution the offers this type of degree that would be more reputable than any offerings here.

Nope, unfortunately i graduated in other state, i wish i did qualify though! I dont get FAFSA either, so its essential i keep my job

It sounds like you’re limping along on your budget. Which is the least expensive in-state option?

Nobody “gets” FAFSA. FAFSA is an application. What is your issue with FAFSA?

What is your state of residence? GA? If so, which instate school is your least expensive option?

I do not qualify for FAFSA because of my parent, yet, i live on my own, and have been for quite some time.

The cheapest out of those would most probably Georgia State Univ. which isn’t my first option for that type of program, and i havent heard much about the programs reputation.

If you have a direct loan then you “qualify” for FAFSA. The only other thing FAFSA can show you qualify for is a Pell Grant for very low income families.

Alot of this depends on where you live. I presume you live in the Atlanta area. Traffic is a major consideration unless you want to only take courses online assuming that can be done. Paying out of state rates taking courses online seems illogical. GA Tech is an intense school academically. Have you considered Kennesaw State or North Georgia?
