bobby100, what about other public schools out of state like UVa, UNC, and Michigan?

I didn't say anything about rank and SAT being trumped by recs or essay. Since her school doesn't release rank, then why the doom forecast? SATs can be improved, albeit even in a month to sufficient levels.

Actually, he does bring up a good point. The OOS tuition can be killer, which is predominatly why its so californian. UVa might be a good bet. Also seems your style.

Alice, schools like UVA and Mich have way larger OOS populations. To me that makes them much more well rounded. Frankly, I would not want to go to any college where 95% came from the state, college is a time for as wide exposure as possible. Again, I'll say that paying the OOS price for state schools should really be thought through. Mich is a good safety for those applying to ivy calibre schools and does have great recruiting for jobs like investment banking as does UVA. The UCs don't have that. Don't know much about UNC. The Echols program at UVA is stellar and really worth a look.

Rocky, many schools don't report rank but it doesn't mean the colleges don't take a pretty accurate guess. Many report decile. Others have info in the profile which makes rank easy to figure. Bottom line is they don't assume everyone is top 10%. Read A is for Admissions in which the former Dartmouth adcom explains their formulas for figuring out rank at schools that don't report them.
