Help Me Choose!

I've gotten into Wellesley, William & Mary, University of Richmond, and Smith.... and they all want to know asap. I have yet to receive a financial aid package from any of the schools. Based on numbers alone, Wellesley is the most "prestigious," but I've heard from the boards that the school is pretty snobby, and the school practices grade deflation. Ahh! This is a tough process!

i’ve got one friend who attended william & mary for undergrad he loved it. and i’ve got another who actually transferred from smith to wesleyan cause she didn’t like it so yeah. i mean, i know i’m not going in depth but i’ve heard better things about william & mary than any of the other schools

william & mary for SURE!! the best school you got into academically with such nice students. a few of my friends go there and hardly anyone transfers out because the whole student body loves it so much.

and CONGRATS! those are absolutely amazing schools to get into!

I’d really wish these schools would give me a financial aid package. It’d make things so much easier. I visited W&M, and that school just seems fantastic. It’s a really tough decision. I want to go to Amherst ultimately, but these schools require that I reply before May 1st.

Go to Wellesly-
If you got in there, you’re smart enough to go there…and it’s one of the most prestigious schools around-

This is a really hard decision, and the deposit to any one of these schools would be like 1/2 of what’s in my bank account. Think I should call and ask for an extension? It’s really hard to make a decision without a finaid package. Wellesley may be amazing, but if they expect me to pay 20k a year or something, then it’s not a real option for me.

can’t you do some kind of work study at one of those places?

Do not be afraid to ask for an extension. You are one of the handful of students they have chosen out of the crowd. Now it’s their turn to suck up to you. If you need more time, tell them so. They should be patient now, considering how hard you worked to make it.

Once more, congratulations on such fantastic results. I wish you the best!

yeah, but work study usually caps out at 3k which is nothing. I know law school is going to cost a fortune, so I’d rather get the most finaid I can for my undergrad degree

If you want boys and sun, go W&M. If you dont want boys and do want snow and Boston, go Wellesley

I’m not sure why they haven’t given you an aid package yet but figuring out what you’re likely to get from schools like Wellesley that meet full need should be pretty easy. Do you know your Profile EFC? If not, they may have a FA calculator on their web site or try the one on Princeton’s. Add in that Wellesley probably still has loans.

No one has given me a finaid package because my situation is difficult. My parents haven’t been in my life for awhile, so I have to explain why I’m not submitting their financial information. I also have to explain every detail of my financial life because they want to know how I’ve been able to pay for living expenses while attending a CC. I also have to have a counselor and a relative write in on my behalf to prove that I’m not making all this up. And when that’s all done with, it still has to go through a review process.

Smith is still reviewing it. Richmond just sent me a letter saying they want more info on my situation. As far as Wellesley & WM go, I just got accepted, so I don’t know when I’ll hear from their finaid departments.

hmom5, most of the schools I’ve applied are need blind, but it just depends how much they’re going to give me in Grants v. Loans

So, I’m thinking of spending some money to fly to Mass. to check out Smith, Wellesley, and Amherst. Think it’s worth the money or should I just wait for the finaid packages? Also, do you think Wellesley or Smith would let me crash at their dorms?

I think it’s a great idea. You do want to see where you’ll be spending the next 4 years. Call to check about the dorms.

Congratulations!! Personally, I would go to W&M hands down.

W&M is definitely an option. I’ve already seen the school and loved it, but I can’t make a decision because I haven’t seen Wellesley or Smith.

Why don’t they release transfer results at the same time and why don’t they all have the same response date?

I’m a Wellesley student right now looking to transfer out. Honestly, Wellesley will most likely give you more money than William & Mary, but the odds are, you won’t feel comfortable here if money is a deciding factor at all. It’s harsh, but it’s the truth. Socioeconomic diversity might be present…somewhere…but it’s hidden. Expect girls planning cashmere and pearls parties. Expect professors to say things like “and you didn’t think 250k a year was that high of a salary did you?” or “you’ve all been to Europe and seen [paintings like these], I’m sure.” Expect to feel isolated for having an income at or, dare I say below, the median for the country.

Ugh, typing it all out just makes me wish I had filled out transfer applications on time for this year even more.

congratz to your acceptances. I think you should ask for a delay to wait for Amherst and to fly over and visit the schools to find the perfect fit.

I’d like to, madamebovary, but I doubt they’ll extend the deadline for me because I’m interested in another school.

likeawillow, if I heard a Professor say that, I’d just call them out for being ignorant. I’m fully aware that these private schools are going to have a lot of elite snobs, and I’ll fully take it upon myself to give them a reality check.

Though, a thread you started awhile ago has made me really rethink Wellesley. Even on CollegePr0lwer, a lot of the students share the same views as you. It seems like most have a love/hate relationship with Wellesley.

well if no extensions, you just have to pay the deposit to one of the schools and if you get into amherst, you just tell that school you changed your mind. You wont be getting a refund for the deposit, but compared to the tuition its really nothing.
