ok so people is telling me that cali is impossible for me in a previous post
http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-los-angeles/1988839-ucla-help-to-this-guy.html#latest
is there any university that is :
-in any of the two coasts pacific or atlantic.
-affordable Im talking about 30k or less.
-hot weather is a must.
-big city.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH I WILL REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP!
I can’t speak to the Atlantic, but the CA state university system has several schools close to the pacific. For OOS, CA state universities are ~$30k per year currently. Top CSU schools include SDSU, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly SLO, but there are many other solid institutions in the system. Not sure if your stats would lead to significant merit aid, if so there are many private schools in CA that are need blind including some of the finest colleges in the world.
Florida International University in Miami has cheap OOS tuition. Though not a traditional-type campus really.
Your best bet is prob applying to private schools that give decent aid tho. Maybe try the gulf coast -probably cheaper than the others.
For what major?
New College of Florida is public that offers OOS aid.
Alabama has a coast and they attract students from OOS by offering aid. Here is a list of all Alabama colleges
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colleges_and_universities_in_Alabama
Louisiana
Missisippi
Texas
All have coasts along the Gulf
New College of Florida is a good suggestion, since it’s located right on the beach and does offer merit scholarships specifically for OOS students. https://www.ncf.edu/admissions/cost-and-aid/scholarships/out-of-state-freshmen/
Check out Occidental College, a small school in LA that President Obama attended. It’s one of about 60 private schools that claim to cover 100% of demonstrated financial need. Run its online net price calculator, including both parents’ incomes, then discuss the results with them. However, most colleges will expect a divorced, non-custodial parent to contribute (so they’ll factor your father’s income into the “need” analysis).
Check this list of merit scholarships to see if your stats, and any of their locations, are suitable:

if you want hot, Sac, Chico and Fresno are for you…
What about ASU Barrett ?
For a beach, UNC Wilmington, Eckerd, USouthern Mississippi, College of Charleston, CSU San Marcos?
For CS, what about Marist, UMass Amherst?
… More precisely, what exactly do you like about California?
Cal States for OOS students can range from around $32K/year to $40K/year. Much depends on which campus.
SDSU’s estimated costs including books/personal expenses and transportation is $40,140 on-campus.
Cal states do not offer financial aid for OOS students. The OP also stated his Father will not contribute to his college education, so OP where is the $30K coming from? You cannot take out that much in student loans.
Again you need to look for schools that will give you both merit and need-based aid, probably close to a full ride (which is very rare) so you cannot be too picky on location.
I would choose Cal State Monterey Bay
@preppedparent – please don’t recommend any Cal States to an out of state student who has no money. It’s hardly helpful.
OP has 30K per year, and may be able to work her way through. It meets all OP’s other requirements.
@preppedparent: According the OP’s original thread, his/her father makes $45K/year and planned on contributing $0 to his college education.
U of South Florida. Florida State, but Tallahassee isn’t really a big city. The Florida publics in general are surprisingly affordable. Don’t know what Violaine means by FIU’s campus not being traditional…Looked pretty normal to me.
@katliamom, CSUs OOS are still a great value. Cal Poly is currently $36k OOS. I can’t imagine any of the rest being more. The OP’s budget is $30k.
OP, where are you getting the $30K? Your other thread implies you need pretty much full aid.
@eyemgh In the thread he started, and cites, OP says his parents cannot give him any money. The assumption here is that he needs a great deal of FA. And as an out of state student, he will not get it at any CA public no matter how “great a value”. Now he says he has a budget of $30K, but our concern is that OP erroneously thinks he can borrow such an amount. (His father won’t qualify, either, according to his original and cited thread.)
Maybe I’m reading it wrong, but if the budget is $30k per year, the gap to $36k is not that great. If it is $30k total for 4 years, then you’re right, no CA school will be a great fit.
It’s also a tad misleading to say that OOS students will get NOTHING for aid at CA schools. They often can’t count on enough aid to bridge the gap between EFC and actual cost, but OOS students can and do get both need based aid and merit aid…sometimes. My son has has a 4 year merit scholarship at Cal Poly and after a major career change for me, was eligible for a small amount of need based aid.
On an unrelated note, what is frequently frustrating about CC is when people post questions and then just disappear. In this case, the OP has not mentioned major or clarified their actual financial need. By participating in their own threads, posters can get the best information from CC. Otherwise, it’s just speculation…
^ that policy ended last year. Starting this year no need based aid can legally be provided oos students.
Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL. (they have an offbeat, surfy culture, too). That’s only a stone’s throw from the city of Jacksonville, both on the Atlantic coast.
