Help me convince my parents

I really want to go to Brown. It’s my first choice. The only reason that i didn’t apply ED is because of financial aid. Assuming i get in (im somewhat of an athletic recruit but it’s complicated…rather not get into it) I told my parents this is my first choice school. My parents are foreign born and consequently ivy and rankings obsessed. They’re wanted me to apply to all the Ivy’s, which i didn’t, because i value fit over ranking. My parents told me that if i do get into Yale, then i have to choose it over Brown. They’re so stupid and i cant get through to them that i want to go to Brown. Can anyone give me some advice?

I had a long, thoughtful, and hopefully helpful answer typed out…until I re-read your post.

Now…my only “advice” is that you stop calling your parents STUPID.

Hmm, well you could apply to Yale and submit a horrible application, full of typos. You could even insert a line in your essay that the only reason you are applying to Yale is because your parents made you.

But let me ask you this question: Let’s say you try your hardest and submit your best work to both Yale and Brown. And let’s say Brown does not accept you and Yale does. Would you go to Yale?

If the answer is yes, seriously think about applying to Yale. Because the bottom line is that your chance of getting into both Yale and Brown are pretty slim. If that happens – well, cross that bridge when you get to it.

yeah i didnt really mean to call them stupid. i was angry when i wrote the post so it def. comes off as immature. R124687, id really appreciate it if you gave me some advice

Apply to both, and try your hardest on both applications. If you get accepted to both, arrange campus visits, see if you can attend a day at classes, speak to students. Involve your parents. If you’re still dead set on Brown, sit your parents down and explain to them why Brown is a better fit for you.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned throughout the application process, it’s that only YOU can decide where you’ll be happy and which college will give you the best opportunities. Your parents want the best for you and assume that higher-ranke colleges will give you more opportunities. You need to show them that Brown is equally as good as Yale and terms of academics and better in all other aspects. :)

Have you & your parents toured the Ivies? We did Harvard & Brown and the difference was astounding. Brown was all about what it was like, the pass/fail options for taking crazy/hard classes outside your major interest, curriculum flexibility, etc. Very impressive. Harvard was “we’re Harvard. Our endowment is huge. Our libraries are huge.”

That said, what you should be doing is talking to your parents about what you want, what you are looking for, etc. However, they are still going to be in control if they want to be. Yale would be awesome as well, but for different reasons.

Yale’s acceptance rate last year was 5.2% !
Yeah more than 94% get rejected and that’s HUGE !

before stressing over this issue, wait and see if you get into either

TigerDude… I also toured both Brown and Harvard and i got the same feelings you did. After visiting, I decided Harvard wouldn’t be for me even if by some chance i did get in.

And NapoleonInRags, I understand that my chances, like everybody’s is slim. However, I noted in the above post that I’m “kind of an athletic recruit.” It’s complicated and I’d rather not get into it but basically, I want to go to Brown and I’d be aided with a possible chance of recruitment. I can only choose one school because my coach is helping me…(I’m qualified so don’t think I’m some dumb athlete)… so I’m hesitant about my coach helping me get into Brown with the possibility that my parents might tell me i can’t go and that they’d prefer i go elsewhere. Nothing is guaranteed though < I know it sounds confusing

@ tiger and Seeme
i saw both Brown and Harvard and i got this amazing feeling at Brown, that i didnt get at Harvard. I felt like it was overrated, especially the beauty of the campus, i mean its nice but i thought cornell was more aesthetically pleasing.

exactly my sentiments as well j0em4d. i liked brown before i came there and i loved it after i left.
