help me create a reading list =)

hey everyone, as the title goes, i want to create a reading list for the summer. are there good books for:

1) improving reading comprehension/ reading skills (an enjoyable book would definitely be a plus)

2) easy to use for the essay.

i know that sometimes any book can be good, but i honestly don't know where to start. thanks in advance! i really want to catch up on some reading =)

1984 is a good one to read. You can come up with an example from that book for almost any essay topic.

The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde
:)

The Great Gatsby is a very good one to start. If you're already quite good, try reading War and Peace, Cervantes, * or *Les Miserables.

I second The Picture of Dorian Gray,

and I'll add Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and Macbeth and Hamlet by Shakespeare.

Personally I wouldn't go and read books. I would read magazines in which the author has similar attitudes to those of the SAT passages. While there may be some fiction passages on the SAT(from novels), they are few in number. Here is my recommendation for you:

You must know vocabulary! Look at the Sparknotes 1000 and memorize that list.

Go to your local bookstore and read Newsweek, the Economist, National Geographic, and Popular Science. Or you can read them online. New York times are also great to read at nytimes.com

Practice CR passages frequently, don't just read. You can do all this reading, but it's all for nothing if you don't practice the actual passages. As in you get points for getting questions right in the passage, NOT for reading.

I second the great gatsby
To Kill a Mockingbird is also a very good read...You can apply anything from it to the SAT essays...

Read at least 2 articles from the nytimes daily...
The Newyorker also contains essays similar to the passages on the SAT.

The books that I use a lot in my essays are 1984 by George Orwell, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Lord of the Flies by William Golding.

Books are a good read are A Separate Peace by John Knowles, Macbeth by Shakespeare, and Les Miserables by Victor Hugo.

I hated a Picture of Dorian Gray....and I am the only one who does in my entire English Class. I really liked The Great Gatsby, Frankenstein(the word ardent is repeated like a 100 times), Farenheit 451, and Lord of the Flies.
