I was accepted to Stony brook, rutgers new brunswick and rutgers newark. I choose biology as my major and want to become a doctor. I am a NJ resident but is stony brook really worth the extra money? I mean at RU newark, I could have a higher gpa than NB plus newark is like 10 minutes away from my house. I like stony brook because of its research opportunities plus it has a medical school and when i called up the office, they said it has an 86% acceptance rate to med schools.
Bottom line: which school is it better to attend to be a doctor. Where could I have better research opportunities, maintain a high gpa (easily) and where would they better prepare me for the MCAT.

Students who attend rutgers, convince me why i should opt for your school over stony brook. Also could you tell me why you chose newark over new brunswick or vice versa

thanks in advance!

There is something to be said for a higher GPA if you’re applying to med school eventually. My friend went to Harvard, crap GPA, could not get into med school anywhere.

so does that mean i should go to newark??

I would consider all factors, not just GPA. Price of out of state vs in state, convenience of campus location, and how much you like each campus. Since you have it narrowed down to 3, I would definitely take the time to visit each campus.

well im pretty much in rutgers on a full ride but i guess stony brook would be around 13k plus i applied for financial aid-haven’t received any aid yet. And the reason I asked this on cc is because i currently live in pakistan. the last time i was in america was like 6 years ago and i was a kid-didnt know anything about college. I guess i’ll visit in may but thats rutgers deadline to tell them whether or not im attending. I was wondering if you could give me some info on the student life at rutgers. I mean how are the classes, are the teachers “motivated”, how’s the food (is there halal food there-i’m Muslim), are any apartments available nearby and the car parking scene.

If you plan on going to medical school, I would take the scholarship and save your money for med school.

I’m am going to guess that most people would choose New Brunswick over Newark due to location and campus atmosphere. I went to pharmacy school in New Brunswick. My son goes to New Brunswick as well, so I would pick New Brunswick. Several of my friends kids go there and they all love it.

My son is currently a freshman and has been happy with his teachers. They seem fair and willing to help.

Parking is about $200 per year and they will assign you a campus to park on. You may not drive between classes; you have to take the bus.

@rualum: sorry for the late response. I was at my village-we don’t have internet there
Thank you very much for the highly detailed info! I guess i’ll attend NB. The only thing keeping me from attending there is the GPA issue. My cousin who’s a senior there had problems maintaining a good GPA and now is gonna do med school from the islands and won’t be a US med school graduate. The only reason i’m going to america is to become a us graduate. I mean here in pakistan it takes only 5 yrs compared to the 8 in the u.s. Well, thanks again for the response!

Having a rutgers degree is very impressive when applying to A job so its good tht ur looking into this school. Alright, take this from someone who’s visited both nb campus and Newark campus. If u want that college experience party hard life and really only be surrounded by other rutgers students. Then deff go nb. Beware that it might distract you from your studies. But if your a city type of guy and want real world experiences and easy internships and close proximity to NYC then Newark is for you. It is the most diverse campus in the nation. And all that trash talk about it being in a bad neighborhood is bull. More than 90 percent of ppl who bash on the Newark campus have never visited. Ull be in the center of downtown and I’ve seen streets in nb that looked ****ter than downtown Newark. Downtown Newark is gorgeous at night and if u dorm u may be able to see a manhattan view from ur dorm. But it’s really up to u if u wanna college feel then nb if u want an independent real world feel go visit newarks campus. Remember college is a time to get a real world feel so ask yourself wud u rather have it partying or focusing on your career. Best of luck to u

wow, I’ve never seen such a great sell of the city of Newark. I hope you are going into marketing.

I did my MBA at night at Rutgers-Newark and still go there for minor league baseball games and the NJPAC. It is not a nice place to walk around at night. Despite the marketing of Rutgers-Newark, NB is the flagship campus and will offer a broader selection of classes, as well as a more tradidtional on-campus experience.

NJmom I’m assuming your a parent and care about youth safety issues. Which I admire but At RUtgers Newark the police station is right across the street from the campus and there are safety ports on every corner. When I went to nb i noticed little police safety and adolescents my agee roaming around streets under the influence looking for a place to party. I personally feel the newark campus is a more internationally recognized envoriment. For individuals who want to truly mature this is deff the school for them to do so. Since the original poster stated he comes from pakistan he is more likely to meet more Pakistanians in ru Newark dud to it’s number one spot in diversity. Not to mention there is more touristic locations in the Newark (njpac newark museum etc.) not to mention weekends in manhattan area where a persons ability to skeek infinite opportunities await. Take my word as an international student I highly recommend you to visit RU Newark.

Rutgers undergraduate school is much more prestigious than Stony Brook undergraduate school. You have an in-state full-ride to Rutgers, and you’re out-of-state for Stony Brook.

However, when it comes to graduate medical school, SB is phenomenal.

When it comes to Newark vs NB, I honestly don’t know. Heed the advice of the more experienced posters above. :P

First off thank you very much! Regarding safety, I’ve heard Newark also provides police escorts if they are needed. As far as in state and out state goes, I got financial aid (grants) from SBU so i’ll be paying only around 4-5000 a year which is good but Rutgers is almost free! I won’t be living on campus because I have to concentrate fully on my studies if I want to get into an american med school so I won’t be attending any parties or going after any girls.
Also, I wanted to ask you guys about the classroom size at rutgers-both NB and Newark.
And i may buy a toyota camry so would it be safe in newark? My uncle studied there almost a two decades ago and he said newark is pretty dangerous and getto. Is that true now? I mean they probably improved their security over 20 years. And if rutgers newark is really that dangerous, can students arm themselves for self defense? Obviously following the NJ firearm rules and age limits

Once again, thank you guys very much for your time!

My experience is also from about 20 years ago. I worked in the Ironbound section and I walked to work everyday from the train station. Back then, it was common for cars to be stolen at least a few times a month from the local parking lots.

My husband went to UMDNJ and I remember stories of muggings and one resident who was beaten on his way into work. Is this the current state of affairs? I really have no idea. I know that you can also be mugged very easily in New Brunswick, but imo, it is easier to stay out of ‘those areas’ in New Brunswick than Newark.

I can’t give you a more current perspective, but Newark is a very large city with a large amount of poverty and so has the problems that go along with that. Since you say you live only 10 min away, I am assuming you already have a feel for the city itself and you are looking more for campus information.

If you got a free ride at either campus, I’d take that and save your money for medical school. Since you are living at home, and not really looking for a campus type of experience, Newark seems to be most convenient for you. I’m sure you will get a good education wherever you go because it is the effort you put into it that counts, and you sound very serious.

Good luck whichever you choose.

The off campus housing options withing 10 minutes of the Newark campus are ugly from both a crime and quality perspective. Listen to your uncle - while the downtown area around the train station and east into the Ironbound section have been revitalized, the worst areas for crime in Newark are just west (Central Ave) and south (Clinton Ave) of campus. How do I know? I live in Essex county and read the local paper every day and have served on jury duty in Newark. There is a decent bus system in Newark, so I would skip owning a car - insurance is very expensive.

I would agree that Newark will have more international students, however it also has lower acceptance standards than NB, so the quality of students will be lower. It will also have more communter students, so you won’t get a true college life experience. Maybe you don’t want that - that’s your decision.

Forget getting a gun - NJ has some of the toughest gun laws in the country. To own a gun you need to apply for a permit from your local NJ police department, get fingerprinted and undergo a full background check. This process takes 3-6 months. As an international student, I doubt you would be approved. Also, this is just for ownership, concealed carry is another permit and only granted to individuals with justified needs, such as security work. Personal safety concerns would not be considered sufficient grounds.

@ rualum thanks! that was helpful. I said I have a house 10 minutes away but have not ever visited it. My parents bought it about 2 years ago when they visited the U.S. I havent seen it hence I don’t have a feeling of the area but i’ll be coming to America on the 23 of April so I guess i’ll have some time to practice my driving, see and get a feel of NJ! Other than that…I also feel that Newark would be a better option but after I visit, I’ll def let you guys know where i’ll be attending.

@nj2011mom: thanks for the safety update. I’m not an international student-U.S citizen. Isn’t the fact that the student quality is low good because I’ll be able to maintain a higher ranking and it’ll be easier for me to keep a high GPA-which i’ll need for med school.

As far as gun laws are concerned, I think NJ is right after California as one of the worst places to own a gun. You’re right about that! Getting a gun wouldn’t be that difficult for me because I am just like any other American (born there, US citizen) but the age limit is 21 (for handguns and 18 for rifles) if I’m not mistaken. So I would be graduating Rutgers by the time i’d be legally old enough to own a handgun! So the gun thing is out of my mind. And I know i’d have to take a cc course and get the permit. So just forget the whole gun thing now. When i’m in med school, i’ll probably buy a couple of guns-when i live in a gun friendly state!
Thanks for answering and for the info!

I’d suggest you start in New Brunswick. If you find its not the atmosphere for you it would be easier to transfer from New Brunswick to Newark than the opposite. New Brunswick is a higher ranked more competitive institution.

If your looking to focus on your professional career rather than partying all the time deff consider Newark campus. In nb the class sizes are too big and you won’t get a one on one with your teachers. In Newark all class’s have less than 20 students so you will go to personally know your teachers. Professors who taught at all the campuses stated that the Newark students are the most exciting and interesting of the group (look it up) due to it’s diversity positive energy and urban environment. As a Rutgers Newark student you won’t just be surrounded by other Rutgers students. But in university ave you will meet students from njit, seaton hall law, and ecc and it is said that the Rutgers Newark students find it easier to maintain a higher gpa than the nb students And that is what really counts in the long run. There is an open house next Sunday you should take the opportunity to visit. As for your Toyota there have a big lot where the school keeps all cars protected under security
