Hi! I am also torn between Michigan and Pitt (along with Purdue) for pharmacy, with preferred admission at Michigan and guaranteed admission at Pitt.
Just wanted to share that there were only 35 freshmen who initially went into Michigan with preferred admission, and some switched their majors afterward (to put the 10 admits in comparison)
@Benzene42 : DO NOT go visit Michigan if your parents don’t have the costs covered from income and savings. Don’t go. It will make you want to go there and you can’t unless you make your parents take loans for you. Don’t do that to them. You cannot take loans for that much - you’re limited to $5,500 for freshman year. It increases a bit each year, for a total of $27,000 over 4 years (31k with interest) with access to more for the actual pharmacy years. 27k is what a college graduate can reasonably expect to be able to pay back over 10 years. A pharmacy graduate can pay back more which is why the pharmacy years will allow you to take on more loans.
Pitt is a GREAT option.
Also, you’ll need to stick to partying on Friday night/tailgating or whatever on Saturday, and every day beside that will be dedicated to doing well in your program.
Just a suggestion- take the money you are palnning to use to visit Michigan and have a nice weekend with your family or friends. Maybe buy some stuff for your college dorm. Save it for spending money at college.
I think if you didn’t live so close to Pitt, you would see it a bit differently.
Just because you live close, doesn’t mean you couldn’t make it seem like you are far if you wanted to.
You can decide how often to come home. You can ask your parents not to come visit you unannounced.
Living on campus is a different world. If you want time away from home, you can stay on campus, if you need some peace and quiet, a break from having a roommate, and want help with your laundry, you can go home a lot easier than other students who have to travel for hours by car or plane. You got the best of both worlds.
I think Pitt is a respectable undergrad university, but if you’re in the guaranteed admissions program, PITT’s health schools are some of the best in the nation. I don’t think you can go wrong with Pitt academically, especially with the professional health schools. However, there are other reasonable reasons to choose Mich if you really believe it is the school for you.
Sorry for the late response, I ended up deciding that Pitt was the best option for me for many reasons. Thank you all for your input on helping me decide! H2P
