Help me decide USC vs NYU transfer

I’m currently debating between going to USC as a transfer for electrical engineering or staying at NYU as a CAS student. I don’t want to lose my opportunity to work in tech/engineering, but I also really love New York and don’t want to leave it.

How many years have you completed at NYU?
Why not transfer to Tandon?

I have finished one year at NYU. I was originally at Tandon, but I didn’t like it which is why I transferred to CAS.

If you didn’t like Tandon, what makes you think you will like engineering at USC? Food for thought.

I like engineering I just wasn’t the biggest fan of the program at NYU.

What’s the difference in cost and where would you like to work once you graduate?

Cost wise they are pretty similar, and I don’t have a concrete idea of where I would like to work once I graduate yet.

What is the difference in the NYU engineering program vs USC. Engineers in our family (and we have quite a few) say the coursework is really the same from school to school.

Was it the “culture” of the department you didn’t like?

Yes I definitely think it was the culture more so than the coursework.

According to College Scoreboard (not self reported, limited to students who received federal aid) median earnings 2 years out for NYU and USC are $61K and $80K respectively. That probably has more to do with working in CA though.

Have you been to USC? Do you know it’s a really nice enclave in what otherwise is the most dangerous neighborhood in LA? Do you have any other options that we could weigh in on?

No, unfortunately, these are my only two options. I have been to USC, and while I definitely like the area NYU is in better I don’t have a big issue with the area around USC either.

Housing will be more at USC. Most of the students move off campus after first year. LA is different, but you learn to love it if you’re there. My son is an engineer in LA. The ocean is nice, the food is amazingly diverse, and entertainment opportunities are plentiful, when we aren’t in a pandemic.

Better school experience versus better place to live. Tough choice that only you can ultimately make. Good luck.

If your goal is to work in electrical engineering, I don’t see what the difficulty is. USC Engineering would seem to be the easy choice vs NYU CAS.

Have fun in LA for a few years for an adventure, and then move back to NY which you love. College isn’t your destination for life, rather it’s a means to an end. Right now your only route to your goal of working in electrical engineering is USC.
