"Thick" Letter arrived by mail today, so confusing.

All S ever wanted to study there was screenplay writing.

Was waitlisted for Cinema and Photography, yet offered choices:
continue to stay on that waitlist
or add another expression of interest

these don't interfere with each other (they say) but can we believe that?

They ask for an answer in l0 days.

He's waiting on 7 other RD outcomes which should be received here by April 1
This was his first answer from anyplace.

Aside from the obvious rollercoaster of the thick envelope, we're not sure what this means in terms of:

Finaid (they knew it was essential for us) if he gets in from a waitlist? Might all the money be assigned to others by then?
He has need, as well as had applied to a merit scholarship for around 7K.
Do we kiss those hopes goodbye, based on today's letter?

In that particular department, for a SCREENPLAY writer (not a film director/production kid) is there any hope for getting off the waitlist?

Has anybody gone through this loop, in previous years, and come out happy?

Since they didn't ask for a portfolio of writings, as other schools did, he doesn't take it as a rejection of his writing talent. But why would he want to go to the school if he's in another department, and perhaps can't even without finaid??

I'm SO confused about this outcome. Any wisdom?

My D received a letter today putting her on the waitlist as well for Cinema and Photography but giving her the option to choose another major. There are 3 other majors that were offered in the Park School, none of which have photography has a component. We'll be investigating whether it's wise to choose something else and stay on the waitlist for C&P which would show more interest in Ithaca. Have you called them to discuss your S being waitlisted and what his options are?

S called the school, had a good and informative conversation with Admissions in which it was very clear that being on a waitlist for C&P was its own story and wouldn't be helped or harmed by adding interest in an alternate interest area
.
Even if he's accepted into the alternative interest area, he remains on the waitlist for C&P.

He sent back the form checking off a different Interdisciplinary major in Culture and Communications, while asking to remain on the C&P waitlist.

He doesn't yet know a lot about how that major will function, but was really pleased to be offered a different approach, given the competitiveness of C&P.

I respect and appreciate Ithaca College for offering an alternative path.

UPDATE: Shiny Package arrived today; Ithaca turned it back around to him very quickly, which he noticed and felt good about. He was admittied to Culture and Communication major. This was a first "Yes" so that was cause for much joy in Mudville tonight. Simply to hear "yes" after this long season was wonderful.

Still waiting to hear from places that would let him pursue his screenwriting more dilligently, but will look into how that C&C major functions. He'll phone more and we'll surely visit. I know the school is very nice, friendly and attractove because we have some relatives there now and 30 years ago, both very pleased with it. I'm feeling deeply appreciative to Ithaca this night.
