Help me figure out a path for majors?

I'm not sure what major and schools I should be looking at for what I'd like to do. I'm very interested in Gay and Lesbian studies, and would like to do research in this area. My interests are less in that ongoing argument of "is gay genetic" and all that jazz, and more in how people of alternative sexualities fit into culture, and how they view themselves and the world around them.

I'm not sure if this falls more into a social science (sociology, anthropology etc) or something else.

I'd like to get a master's and a PhD, but I don't know what field deals with things like this. From what I've been reading there are very few "gay and lesbian studies" master's or doctorate programs, and that most researchers in the field deal with a more general subject (How they relate to history, policy formation, psychology etc).

Also, as a former video game / internet addict, I'd like to look at how people of alternative sexualities fit into online communities / online gaming, as my experience shows a lot more homophobia over these mediums than you would run into in real life.

What sort of field deals with questions like these?

Thanks

It sounds like you’re looking for a combination of both sociology and psychology. I’d recommend taking classes in both and then deciding which one you’d like to major in based on those class experiences. You can even double major if you like both of them enough.

Thanks so much for the quick reply; just the answer I was looking for.

Berkeley has a [minor in LGBT Studies](LGBT Minor | Department of Gender and Women's Studies) under the [Gender and Women’s Studies department](http://sis.berkeley.edu/catalog/gcc_view_req?p_dept_cd=GWS). You can check the course catalog to see what kind of things are studied.

Such a subject (if you are not delving into the biology of such) is more of a social studies and perhaps humanities subject (interdisciplinary based on the more usual departmental divisions at universities), rather than a science subject.

WashU also has several LGBT focused classes in their curriculum. You would be able to major in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and focus more on sexuality than the other two if that’s what you want. http://wgss.artsci.wustl.edu/undergraduate
