Help me finalize my college list

Hello,

I just wanted to make sure I'm applying to the right colleges. I have been reading stories of people applying and not getting anywhere and I don't want this to happen to me...

I got 2070 the first time I took the SAT (760 CR, 710 M, 600 W) and I am waiting for December results. I know writing looks bad but I'm actually not a native speaker and don't always spot the mistakes in the sentences in the "identifying sentences errors" section.
I'll take three Subjects Tests in January (Math II, Chem or Bio and Lit).
I don't know about my GPA because I am an international student. I took the most challenging courses and I have decent ECs I believe.

I'd like to go to a school that put a good emphasis on music and on sciences (specially math, chem, bio). I plan to major in Music, Math or Chem, or double-major in Music and Math or Chem.

I don't really know about the size and location and on, but I'd like to have a lot of volunteer, travelling and research opportunities. And I don't really care if it's not in a big city but I think I may prefer living in New England or Illinois, Ohio, NY.

I think I may need some fin aid but totaly I'm not sure about that (sister may go to grad school), so I think I'll just apply and see what I get. I'm URM if it counts for something.

I was planning to apply to Bard, Oberlin, Tufts University and University of Cincinnati. I might also apply to Harvard, Columbia and Princeton, though some people told me I'd just be ridiculous.
I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks for reading my huge post and for answering !!

Rhodes might be a match for stats and interests, though maybe not for location (it’s in Memphis, TN). I had a friend who majored at Rhodes in Music and Math; her senior seminar presentation was about the mathematical compromises behind the different scales that can be used to tune a piano. It was really cool.

About 80% of Rhodes students participate in volunteer activities, it’s rated as a top study abroad institution by Open Doors, and there are a ton of internship and research opportunities due in part to our location in Memphis. In particular there are great research opporunities in Bio and Chem at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

When you say major in music - as a performance major or for a general BA? Are you planning to apply for a double degree at Bard or Oberlin? Or a Tufts/NEC double degree? Or to CCM, the conservatory at Cincinnati? (I don’t know how they are about double degrees.) You have very selective conservatories on your list - admission will all be audition based, unless you plan only to get your music degree in the general college - which will be a very different experience.

If you do not plan to get a Bachelors of Music, but you just want a general double major (BA in both subjects) I would advise that you consider colleges without conservatories. In general, you will have a lot more opportunities there.

Thanks for your answers lynxinsider and SpiritManager

I’ll be applying to these double degrees (already applied to the music schools), but if I don’t get into, I’d like to major in Music (BA) or major in Science (chem or physics) and minor in Music or double major in Music and Science. Not every school in my list offers double majors or minors so it would depend on the school.

I applied to CCM but I indicated on my application that I would also be interested in just studying at the University of Cincinnati in case I don’t make it into the College-Conservatory.

How do you think my chances are just for the colleges I mentionned, and what safety could I include in my list ?

I forgot to say that my rank is roughly 6/30, though school does not officially rank.

Bassplayer08 - I suggest you start a new thread on the Music Major forum page with more information about what kind of school you’re looking for. As always, lots of great help there - especially for a bass player. I’m glad you’re applying to Bard and Oberlin conservatories/colleges for the double degree : both schools could be perfect for you. Did you look into Lawrence University as someone suggested on another thread?

You will also want to find out, if you go to a school like Univ. of Cincinnati, but are not in CCM, what the opportunities are for lessons and performing.

There are lots of safety schools out there, which could be fine - for instance large state schools, as well as small LAC’s with good music departments - but you need to know how much your family can pay for you and whether they give aid to internationals before bothering to apply.

The folks on the Music Major forum will know where the good Bass professors are…

I second Lawrence Univ. For a safety check out DePaw University in Indiana.

Patriot League colleges are a great choice: Bucknell, Colgate, Lafayette, Holy Cross, …

I think I may need some fin aid but totaly I’m not sure about that (sister may go to grad school), so I think I’ll just apply and see what I get. I’m URM if it counts for something.

Do you know how much your parents can pay each year? You’ll need to show full educational funding to get your visa.

Which URM are you a member of? Some schools want more students of certain minority groups.

Holy Cross, Bowdoin.
