I know he does not have to apply to reaches but he said maybe one just to say he did it. He is not a high stats kid so the obvious reaches are out of the question. He has 3.5uw(3.9 w), honors and APs, in 10%, average urban public, good ECs (with internships and such, meaningful to him) nothing earth shuttering, 2150 SAT, a couple subject test in 700s. LORs are about classroom discussion, presentations and originality. Wants a business school in the North, most probably to study MIS and such (no banking stuff). Preference suburban. Full pay.
Any suggestions of a reach school that he might have a chance?
Also, how do you guys estimate acceptances to out of state publics when the cds does not differentiate between in state and out state student stats?
Thanks!
Do you think U of Minnesota (Carlson) would be a good reach, or out of the question?
NYU Stern, Carnegie Tepper, and Northwestern Kellog are all great reaches for business here in the North!
Bryant, or Bentley?
Re: #2 - The OP appears more interested in realistic options for her son, whose stats make him an unlikely candidate for the schools you mentioned. I would suggest Lehigh, University of Richmond, Babson, and Fordham/Gabelli.
According to school’s Naviance both Bryant and Bentley are matches. The last 2 years not a single student with those stats got denied there.
Thanks Woogzmama! Looking for realistic reaches, if there is such a thing! Babson is an interesting choice as students can take classes at Olin (next door) and Wellesley (shuttle). In Naviance he stands just between the kids that were accepted and those that did not.
Lehigh, Bucknell, Babson, Northeastern . . .although I’m not really sure those are all reaches; some may be matches. Indiana’s Kelly has direct admission for SATs over 1300 (M/CR) and a 3.7 GPA . . .not sure if that’s weighted or unweighted.
Agree Bryant and Bentley are likely admits. My son is applying to those, and his stats are lower than your son’s (though he is coming out of a well regarded private).
My older son goes to Bucknell, but not as a management major . . .but happy to answer questions about the school in general if that’s helpful at all.
Also, if willing to go as far south as Richmond, you might want to consider U. Maryland . . .it has a strong business school in a good location.
I second Carnegie Tepper
He is looking at U Maryland but can not figure out how competitive it is.
For the regular Arts and Sciences, my son just makes the cut off where our private school recommends applying. His grades and APs sound comparable to you son’s, but his test scores are lower by a significant amount. So my guess is your son would be competitive for arts and sciences. Business is likely to be a reach. Our school feeds a lot of students into Maryland so I think they have a pretty good handle on who should apply, but not sure whether being OOS hurts or helps.
Has your son done any internships or started his own business in his MIS interest or another interest?
Yup, my kid had a couple internships and a very small web business.
He had another meeting with his gc and he was asked again to add a couple reaches but really I can not think of any. He looked at schools like Lehigh and Bucknell but really he did not like them much. He is more and more interested in U of Minnesota but I have no idea if he can get in
