Hi guys! I am a second semester junior and would like to start narrowing down my college list. Tomorrow I have a meeting with my parents and school conselor and would like to be able to present some colleges that seem reasonable.
As for my stats, I have a 4.4 weighted GPA. I’m taking 3 APs (APUSH, AP Lang, and AP Spanish). I’m waiting on the results for the January SAT to set what I got, as it was my first time taking it. I have been heavily involved in a time-intensive extracurricular activity all throughout high school and hold multiple leadership positions within it. I am president of a club and have interned online at an international communications company ever since freshman year. I live in California.
Now for colleges! I want to major in Communications or Media Studies and minor in international studies/modern languages/creative writing/translation studies, something along these lines (I’ll figure it out haha!).
So far I on my college list I have UCLA (my dream school), UCSD, UCSB, UCSC, American University, and University of San Francisco.
I’d rather go to a bigger college than a smaller one, but medium-sized ones are fine. I also want to be somewhere warm, as I’m a wimp in the cold. I also wouldn’t like to be in a college town/suburban setting, I’d rather be in a big city or in a place with lots of pretty nature.
Does anyone have any suggestions off the top of their head? Thank you!
Until you have test scores, it is impossible to give recommendations. For a safety, I would look at your local in-service area Cal state. Your GPA is competitive but at the end of Junior year, you need to calculate your UC GPA. HS course rigor is a little lacking with only 3 AP’s so far??? How much are you and your parents willing to pay? Affordability is a major criteria for a safety school.
Yes, I’m waiting on my SAT score to help me determine good possibilities. According to RogerHub my UC GPA is 4.21 (counting my 3 APs and the 4 UC-approved honors classes I took last year). As long as the cost isn’t exorbitant and I like the school, we should be able to pay. Thanks for the Cal state suggestion, I will definitely look into that
Depending on your test scores, Tulane might be a match. It’s not a large school, but it’s in a warm, beautiful, fascinating city. They are very generous with merit aid.
Arizona State is closer to home, and was recently named the nation’s most innovative university by U.S. News and World Report, which I think would bode well for its communications/media programs, although I don’t have any first-hand knowledge to share. ASU would definitely be a safety for you. You would likely be a candidate for Barrett, their Honors College.
And thanks for the suggestions of Tulane and Arizona State! I looked into both of them and they seem like great choices, particularly in the specialized programs they have that I would be interested in (for Tulane, the Altman Program in International Studies and Business where you recieve two degrees and specialize in a foreign language. And at Arizona State they have a fast track program for a degree in Mass Communications and Media Studies in three years). Thanks for the suggestions, they were very helpful!
