I'm having a problem thinking of more match and safety schools that I can apply to. Most of the schools that I keep thinking of/that I like are either too expensive and/or really hard to get into. I live in Pennsylvania, and I will need financial aid from the college I go to. I got a 2250 on my SATs (720 CR, 750 Math, 780 Writing) and I'm taking my SAT IIs this Saturday (the 6th). My weighted GPA is around 4.15 and my unweighted is around 3.9.

My dream job is an Arts Administrator at a theatre, and its imperative that I'm in a school near/in a city to get good internships. I want to major in Communications (maybe Marketing or PR) and do either a double major or a minor in Theatre, so its important that my schools have good programs in both. Most of my extracurriculars are in the arts as well (choir and theater), and I want a college that has strong programs. So far my list consists of:

Reach Schools:
Northwestern University
Barnard College (they don't have communications, but I really like the school/location... :/)

Match Schools:
Boston University (maybe more schools like this that are attainable but strong?)

Safety Schools:
University of Pittsburgh
Emerson College

Maybe U Rochester? You’re going to have to check it out as I only know about it from their science side, but I know they have Eastman School of Music and my guy has been continually telling me about various acting opportunities and events he’s been going to for fun. They may also have a decent Theater program (or not). You’ll have to see. Your stats should get you in and they are a good need-based aid school (with some merit aid options too). I see them being more “performancy” than Pitt (another school we were interested in from the neuro-side of academics).

Otherwise, do any of the NYC area schools have what you are looking for? Fordham? Hofstra?

How about any of the DC schools? American? GWU? One of our top theater kids from our high school went to GWU this fall.

Fordham is a great school in a great location (Lincoln Center campus is in the heart of Manhattan and it has a strong theater dept. or the Rose Hill campus in the Bronx has easy access to Manhattan) - you’d have a shot for significant merit aid there.

University of Dayton has some assured scholarships and Comm and Theatre degrees. The arts community is Dayton is surprisingly vibrant for its size.

The city part may not be as important as you think. Some of the colleges that I’ve looked at (sorry, I don’t remember which ones off hand) have internships already set up in the type of cities you’re probably thinking about. They also have semesters, some required, that take place in such cities to deal with the issues you’re talking about. Since you need financial aid, you might try looking at schools where you would definitely be in the top 75th% in scores and offer the majors you’re interested in and go from there.

My d is a University of Rochester grad. You can PM me for more information. The theatre program is a concentration within the English department major. With your stats it would be a match school. For safety schools you might look at Syracuse, Ithaca and University of Delaware as possibilities. Both Syracuse and Ithaca are well-known for communications programs.

I would consider Indiana University as a safety, and it looks like you’d be offered merit scholarship if you apply before November 1 (and the app is easy). IU’s Arts Managment program is an amazing way to study your craft but also learn marketing, fundraising, and policy around runnning an arts organization. Students have amazing internship and career opportunities in Bloomington, Chicago, New York, DC…
