I was hoping to get into UC Davis, UC Irvine, or Cal Poly SLO, but now that most California schools can’t get my test scores I think they’re now effectively reaches.
First, my stats:
GPA: 3.7uw/4.0w/3.97uc
SAT: 1320 (660,600) Oct 2019
Public suburban CA school
AP Scholar with Distinction
Activities/Awards:
-BSA Eagle Scout Award (I lead the construction of a new seating area for my church, including raising $18k, coordination with a concrete contractor, and about a year of planning.)
-Speech and Debate (I competed for three years, including two at the varsity level. I earned a NSDA Degree of Excellence for my competitive success and held leadership.)
-Golf - I competed in the JV Golf Team at my school freshman year, and played recreationally during sophomore and senior years.
-Community Service - Vacation Bible School Cast Member
-I will probably be working starting in October
Please chance me for: UC Davis, Irvine, Cal Poly SLO, San Diego State, Oregon State, University of Arizona.
Also, if you have any ideas for other schools that I can apply to that would be “matches,” I could really use them to broaden the colleges I’m applying to. Right now, SDSU and OSU are the only ones I consider to be matches, and I’d like at least a few more. Preferably west coast schools on the Common App (WUE would be extra nice), but any suggestions are welcome.
You can still submit your test scores-- you just don’t have to. I agree this is going inject much more uncertainty into the system though. It is very hard to tell where you stand wrt other applicats (and hard for the schools to tell too!)
Based on your other thread, your intended major is Mechanical Engineering/Aerospace Engineering.
Unfortunately UC’s have always been GPA focused vs. test focused, so going test blind may not have as much as an impact on your chances as you think.
Some UC statistical data and there are 13 areas of criteria the UC’s use beside test scores.

I would add Cal State Long Beach and San Jose State as possible Match schools.
@Techno13 But that changed the other day with the injunction that prevented any use of the SAT/ACT in light of the pandemic for the year.
@Gumbymom thanks for the suggestions and for the data! Asking around, I think I might agree with you that my situation hasn’t changed a ton, especially considering my 1320, while a fine score, wasn’t going to particularly sway my application. I think I’ll apply to Long Beach and I’m looking into SDSU and SJSU as other matches.
University of Arizona admits frosh to the campus with a 3.0 (recalculated) HS GPA. Engineering admission may require higher HS GPA.
