Help me find more matches and safeties!!

Okay right now I have a pretty decent list of schools but I'm not really satisfied with it. Anyways here are my stats and at the bottom it'll be my current list. I'm going to be completely honest, when I say my EC's are bad they are...

Asian Male from Texas, Class of 2010
Public School, 70% of the school goes to UT or A&M, rarely any to top schools. Competitive compared to other schools in the district.
I will apply for financial aid (my brother goes to NYU so of course I'll need it)
Intended major is probably linguistics. Maybe math. Maybe French.

Unweighted GPA: 3.67 (Exactly 2 A's per B)
Weighted: 4.50 (5 for an A in AP or Honors, 4 for A in regular classes)
Class Rank: Top 7.5%, 89/1180

SAT I Superscored: 800 M, 680 CR, 760 W = 2240
SAT I Single-sitting: 780 M, 680 CR, 760 W = 2220
SAT II U.S. History: 720
Will take French Listening, Math I, and Math II in November

Extracurriculars are pretty bad. I was in Key Club for three years but I never really went to meetings, only have one "official" year. French Club for three years, VP junior year, Pres senior year. That's it. I work for my dad managing/designing
websites for the computer and iPhone.

For rec's from teachers, I'm pretty sure one will be amazing and the other will be just "alright"

Now for my current list of colleges:
1 McGill
2 Boston College
3 Harvard
4 UT Austin

I've always considered 1 & 2 as matches, 3 as a reach, and 4 as a safety. But now when I look at the list, if I get rejected from 1 & 2 (a real possibility), I'm kind of forced to go to UT... which I don't mind, but I really want to go out of state.

What I want:
Urban location up North, preferably around New England, NO New York
Medium sized school, 5000 - 15000
Has somewhat of a French community (hard, eh)
Has a sports community and school pride

Thanks guys :D

recalculate ur gpa if honors courses are maximum 4.5 and ap is 5.

you’re in at ut if that mattes lol

Haha yeah thankfully. I really don’t want to stay in Texas though…
and my GPA on that scale is a 4.30. I’ve only taken 4 AP classes so far. This year I’m taking 5 more though.

not sure why you’re interested in mcgill, unless u want to live in canada. Ive heard their recruitment in US isnt great so think about that. but it looks like you’re in good standing for all except harvard because its harvard lol.

Boston University?

no sports^^ and too big

McGill is because it has a good reputation, internationally and in Canada (where I want to live when I’m older) and the city is amazing i hear.

BU, no thanks. I don’t like it’s campus and for some reason i’m just NOT a big fan of the school. thanks for the suggestion though =]

and yeah, harvard is just there for my mom, who’s in love with the financial aid program and prestige

I believe that McGill also has some scholarships especially for people majoring in French. You might want to look into it.

I think McGill is a great choice: great U, great city, very international flavor, Anglophone but surrounded by Francophones. You might want to consider some of the other Canadian universities, too.

Other schools noted for language study include Georgetown, Dartmouth, and Middlebury. D and Mid put you within reasonable visiting distance of Quebec, although Mid is smaller than you want and neither is urban. If you are interested in arcane languages–Akkadian, anyone?–the U of C and Berkeley have plenty. You also might want to look into Tufts. I’m not familiar with their language offerings, but since they have the Fletcher School (where undergrads can take classes) I would assume they must be reasonably strong.

Two other points: a) Do not sell you web design activities short. Much more interesting as an EC than the typical clubs and so forth. b) I see no reason at all to take both Math I and Math II. Take Math II.

Schools with strong linguistics programs include, I think, Berkeley, UCLA, and MIT, amongst others. I think BU is supposed to have a good dept.

Not much in New England to match your criteria. U of New Hampshire, U of Vermont? Don’t blame you for wanting to avoid the state of New York. Queens University in Kingston, Ontario; U of Pennsylvania; Lehigh. Check out Miami of Ohio.

Northeastern, UVM. There are lots if you’re open to smaller.

Tell your mom she’s wasting your time and her money with the Harvard application.

The students at University of Vermont and at Champlain College both road trip up to Montreal; it is not far. Maybe consider Champlain?

Our NCAA Champion hockey team disagrees.

^^lol touche. name 3 other sports teams you guys have?

ive heard you guys havent had a football team for at least a decade. that might be a turnoff to most people.

Well I dont go there anymore, but I still support the hockey team religiously. BU no longer has a football team, nor a baseball team. Basketball team has a great chance of making the tourney this year, though.

There’s something a little unnatural about a college as big as BU not having a football team. It’s almost like not having a history department, or not having vomit on the floor in a dorm’s men’s room on a Saturday morning… Even the U of Chicago has a football team, and when the bruisers from Chicago play those brutes from Oberlin, it’s amazing nobody gets killed.

Consolation - I agree, it’s definitely my number one choice. I’m going to visit the university in October so we’ll see if it lives up to the hype =]
Georgetown is an interesting option but it is pretty expensive  I’m not sure about Dartmouth and Middlebury seems a little too small for me. and I definitely DO NOT want to go to the West Coast haha. Thanks for the suggestions though.
And I guess you’re right about the web design one, and Math I and Math II is because I already took Math II (670) and I have no idea what else I would take in November. In case I do bad in Math II again I might have a good Math I score to send, right?

Schmaltz - Queens University is an interesting option as a Canadian backup for McGill, thanks :D. The rest aren’t very appealing though :/

hmom5 - I already checked out NEU and neither of my parents liked it, and I didn’t really like it either. And UVM doesn’t look as interesting  Sorry I feel like I’m being waay to picky
And I definitely agree about the Harvard thing, I honestly don’t think I have a chance, but you try telling her that…

MidwestMom2Kids_ - Champlain College seems a little… selling myself short, I guess. Just took a quick glance from CollegeBoard and it seems a little low for me. Same with Vermont :/

diontechristmas - My top three sports are baseball, football, and hockey (in that order) which is why I like BC (even though they might not be the best at any of them) It’ll be a sacrifice I have to make for McGill though haha

baseball in general or including college baseball?

both. I only realized BC had a baseball team after they played UT for 23? innings though haha

Yeah, that was a great game. I watched a lot of it. College baseball isn’t very big on the east coast, so you’re not going to see fan support like you would for basketball, football and hockey, although if you go to BC, you wont see fan support for anything.

No truly southern school has D-I hockey and football.

^^college baseball is rarely televised. ive seen it once and it was the national championship game with rice about 4-6 years ago.
