I want 1-2 reach schools too add. I have a 1990 SAT (720CR,600M,670W) and a 3.75 GPA. I am also a URM from an underrepresented location (Puerto Rico). I plan on studying economics and was considering schools like Northwestern, John Hopkins and Tufts (not sure about the latter's economics program). Any suggestions?

What about Washington U in St. Louis? Boston University, George Washington, Georgetown. I would go ahead and try for Cornell or Dartmouth too.

I already have BU and GWU, aswell as NYU. NYU accepts a local test score, which I scored in the equivalent of a 2200-2250. I figure these would be matches, since it appears I am in the 40%-60% in SAT and GPA.

I tried Cornell ED, got rejected. Don’t like Dartmouth. I could give WUSTL and Georgetown some consideration. ****es me off that Georgetown doesn’t accept Common App though lol.

I think Georgetown would be a good fit. Do you like liberal arts schools?

might try Holy Cross-top25 LAC that is SAT optional and JAN 15th app due date.

Sorry to say that I don’t really like Liberal Arts schools. I think I’m going to try Georgetown and Northwestern, though I am still open to other considerations. I do like a ideally urban setting, with an active social scene and sports teams, but academics is the most important aspect. I do think both GT and NW would be good fits.

Chicago is a reach for you and very strong in econ, and it’s in a city with a lot going on. I have no affiliation with Chicago.

I would not be continuing to look for reach schools. I would spend my time looking at match schools.

Thanks for sharing your opinion Bookmama. I already have a lot of matches and was accepted at UMN.

I was originally high on UChicago, but the “nerd school” reputation threw me off.

I’d say Carnegie Mellon. Strong in econ, outstanding in business (if that’s a concentration that interests you). I am very disappointed that they don’t offer aid for internationals, because I’d love to go there.

There are also Emory, U of Toronto (VERY strong in econ, and would probably be a match for you), UCs (match to low reach) and USC (also match, I believe).

NYU could be a match (and stern is excellent).

Johns Hopkins is not that good in econ, go for CMU!

Could you give me some thoughts on schools with my profile? I’m also majoring in econ an want study-hard/party-hard schools (unless I am accepted by a big brand, like Harvard, Yale or UChic)

Definitely go for the lower Ivies and maybe a few of the following:
Chicago
Stanford
Duke
Michigan
Vandy
Rice
Emory
Georgetown
Notre Dame
Boston College
USC

Thanks for the tips everyone! Keep 'em coming!

While I like Penn, Stanford and Duke, I don’t really like my chances there. Might be convinced to give it a shot though.

Michigan is also cool, but they don’t give a lot of financial aid and have a very expensive tuition.

After that, I like USC, Georgetown and Northwestern. USC and Northwestern aren’t as popular with Puerto Ricans as Georgetown is, so that would likely give me a better shot. Specially since Georgetown College is especially competitive. Also, Georgetown isn’t in the Common App and has like three essays, lol, but that is just an aside factor.

My other doubts with USC and Georgetown is the strength of their economics program (specially for USC). From the rankings I’ve seen, Georgetown’s econ program is surprisingly not that good, even though one would expect it to be. Same thing goes for USC, but I’ve also read in forums that this is true, and that econ is not one of USC’s best programs.

Also, my course schedule isn’t really that good, only two APs (both this senior year, A in both of them), and 5 honors in my freshman year, none after that. Also, my GPA is also weighted, as that is the only type of scale my school uses. They weight due to the difficulty of the course in relations to others. Still, 3.75 is the GPA that will be reported by my school and is treated as such. If it where to be considered as other schools are though, and be considered completely unweighed, my GPA would likely be 3.5 overall.

In the end, I think I will end up applying to Northwestern and USC. What worries me most about USC is its econ program, as I previously said. If it is good, I will apply, as I really do like USC.
