I posted a thread a while ago about safeties, and it was extremely helpful, so I thought I would ask you all again for you help.

My matches are...
-Boston College
-UMiami
-Tulane
-Wake Forest
-Clemson
... so you get the idea

The reaches I initially liked were Emory, Vanderbilt, Rice, and Davidson... but now I'm not really into them. I'd definitely not be ready to enroll if I were admitted...

any suggestions on reaches that might be realistic for me? does anyone know how hard UMich is to get into OOS too?

No one can tell you how realistic your choices are unless you provide some more information. Is your GPA 4.0 or 2.0? Is your SAT 2350 or 1650? We need details.

lol alright...

cum GPA: 3.65 weighted, I don't know unweighted yet

SATs: 1970 (620 CR, 670 M, 680 W) and will be retaken

ACTs: to be taken in Sept.

SAT IIs: Math I - 680, French - 700

not ranked

pretty decent ECs - cross country, crew, yearbook editor, vice-commodore of a junior yacht club

I'll submit an art portfolio too

big sailor too

I hope your unweighted GPA isn't much lower than the 3.65 weighted, because then some of your match schools will become reaches (namely BC and UMiami -- not sure about the others). BC is probably already a slight reach, though. Do you have a prospective major yet?

I dont think BC is a match.

This isn't important but I think BC is a match for me... my school has a very close tie with BC and got in 16 out of the 31 applicants there this year... the average GPA for BC students from my school is a 3.69 and SATs are like 2020... so I'm pretty close to that.

but any suggestions for definite reaches?

lylbeachbabee, I'm still wavering among a few.. but I'm interested in French

BC is a reach unless you get your SAT scores up to 2050 + and then I would still call it a low reach.

If you'd like more reaches maybe G-town (big reach), Lehigh (slight reach), Tufts(big reach), Northwestern (big reach), NYU (slight reach)?

Good luck.

yeah.. i agree with everyone else saying BC is a reach, no matter what your schools does. get the SAT scores up 100 or so points and then youll be better.

UMich is very competitive to get into OOS. definetly a reach for you.

Other reaches could be:
Notre Dame
USC
NYU
UVA
Penn State (slight reach)

its kinda hard to pick good reaches without knowing more of what you want

Penn State is definitely not a reach...

I always feel like reaches are lost causes... why would a school want me if I'm below their range of scores? I mean I'm not going to be recruited or anything...

So basically I just feel like it would be a waste of time to apply to a school that will most likely reject me. And besides, I'm pretty happy with my selection of matches...

What about Georgetown?

Tulane isn't a match for you at this point, it's more of a reach.

tulane :
acceptance rate - 23%
avg. gpa - 3.66 UW 4.06 W
avg. act - 31
avg. sat - 1345

If you don't want to apply to reaches, don't. Especially don't apply if you're applying just because it's a reach. That way at least you won't end up obsessed with a reach and then crushed once you're rejected. If you like your matches, then let them be. Plus, it seems like a lot of people agree that some of your matches are a little reachy, so maybe you're already covering a full spectrum (safety-----match-----reach).

William & Mary would be a reach, but if you didnt like Rice or Davidson you might not like W&M.

Yeah I think I'll stick to applying to my match schools because those are the ones I'm really interested in... and if I find one that is a definite reach that I like then I'll give it a shot...

MonStar, where did you find those stats? They seem absurd... a 23% acceptance rate for Tulane?

And I know you all are trying to tell me that the schools I listed are reaches for me, but I'm sticking to what my college counselor has matched them up according to my grades and others who have gone there... I didn't ask if those schools were matches or not, I was just looking for suggestions on some definite reaches that I might like.

From the admissions office and emails they send out. It's also on the school's wikipedia page, but they haven't officially published the numbers yet as this is for the class of 2012. It's accurate though. Tulane saw a slight dip in admissions for a year or two after the storm and in that time you might have been a match, but admissions have surged recently and the incoming students are now more academically qualified than ever. I'm not trying to dissuade you from applying, just do it early as that is your best shot.

When did Tulane turn into Emory? LOL indeed...

"Penn State is definitely not a reach..."

Penn State University Park is tough to get into and the stats put this person in the middle %50. I wouldn't say it is complete reach, but a slight reach is definitely legit.

"When did Tulane turn into Emory? LOL indeed..."

You can laugh if you'd like but the numbers, other than the acceptance rate, are correct and they are now on Tulane's admissions site. Now that the numbers are finalized they raised the acceptance rate to 27%
