Help Me Find This School

I live in CA and I am looking for some non-UC schools to add to my application list, but I'm having trouble finding schools that hold my interest and fit what I'm looking for. I have a 4.3/2200 SAT (retaking) and average ECs (nothing national or anything).

Things I'm looking for:

-Strong humanities/social sciences

-I'm African-American, so I would prefer a diverse school that has at least a 5% AA population. I realize that self-segregation exists (and that most applicants are cut from the same cloth), but I would also like a school that at least appears to have good racial interaction.

-Flexible cirriculum

-An intellectual student body. Not a campus that has an elitist or pseudo-intellectual vibe, but a campus in which I can find conversation that is "stimulating" as opposed to merely gossip or small talk.

-A school in an area that has more entertainment opportunities than just partying.

-Less than 10,000 undergrads

-Mid-Big City location

-Liberal-minded student body (Yet still opened minded to other beliefs...maybe "accepting" is a better word...)

-Laid-back feel

-SUBTLE school spirit

-I'd prefer a school with prestige. I'm not obsessed with rankings, but I would like a school that is recognized and well regarded within academic circles.

-Grade inflation (lol)

Suggestions????

There are lots of top private universities that meet your criteria for size, culture, location, etc… As for the percent African American students, you can look that up on the Common Data Set for each school. The degree of intergration is a question best posed on the forum for each school that meets the criteria you have set.

Except for the grade inflation criteria, I think Rice fits what you’re looking for. It’s ranked high for quality of life and race/class interaction. The reason for this is the fact that it has residential colleges (no Greek life) and the social life is very inclusive – everyone in each college becomes like a family, so unlike a lot of schools there’s little self-segregation based on ethnicity. Take a look for yourself: [Rice University - Virtual Tours](http://www.rice.edu/virtualtours/)

I think WashU in St. Louis has a lot of what you’re looking for. (Not sure about grade inflation, though). The Af Am enrollment is at 10 percent.

Brown has most of what you want, except the % of AA. And Stanford also qualifies, if you overlook the % of AA.

WashU has the criteria. I’m sure other schools do too.

What are you looking for in terms of academics? What kind of major(s) or program(s) are you interested in?
