Alright, well, I'm 19 and an accounting major. I'm going to a CC right now, but was at a university last year but left for financial reasons and now that I'm back home and going to CC I seem to have much more free time... that I'm wasting sitting around doing nothing (and I have a 4.0 there, so I'm doing schoolwork, but it's easy).

I've never had a job before (mainly because my parents were nice), but I want one now, even if they still don't care if I don't get a job. However, I don't just want a job for the sake of getting a job and having some money... like working at Best Buy or a restaurant or something. I want a job that will actually help me with my career.

How would I go about doing that? I live 45 minutes (by train) outside NYC, so could work there after classes some days and could try and find work somewhere close, but dunno. I feel like as a student with no experience they won't even want me unless I already know someone.

Anyways, I just need some advice as to where to start looking for part-time jobs and internships. Also, if not at an accounting or finance firm or something, then I'm also thinking of real estate because that actually interests me as well... would need to take steps to get a license with that though.

Sorry for the long post btw, but I'm done now and hoepfully I'll get some help.

first things first, check your career center! they will help you out.

afterwards check these sites out:

www.craigslist.com
www.hotjobs.com
www.monster.com

make sure you have a good resume all prepared too.

Community colleges do very little if not nothing to help with internships. Try an organization such as Inroads(if you're a minority). Look up a few chambers of commerce websites and see if there are internship opportunities available. What most people don't realize is that us CC students don't have the oncampus career centers with an abundance of internship postings.

Yea, community college doesn't help... trust me, I asked them about it. You're right that it is nothing like a university. Last year there was lots of help being thrown at me left and right, I didn't take it though because I didn't really know what I wanted to do anyway. Also, by the time I knew what I was doing I was on my way out out...

I will definitely look into it when I transfer out this coming fall, but until then I would like to find something.

I've been checking out monster and I'll check those other sites as well. Also, with regards to being a minority, would Cuban count?

Also, with regards to a resume... I have no work experience, which is one of the things that scares me. How does one get their foot into the door being an inexperienced student? It seems I need to know someone or really force my way in... we'll see.

Anyway, any other advice is appreciated, thanks.

Oh and it sucks not having any work experience under my belt simply because I truly am hardworking, I do well in classes, I tutor right now (not getting paid though) and am always responsible when I'm committed to something. It's unfortunate my resume wouldn't show this though...

Oh well.

I'd check websites of Universities around you to see if their career services list any local internships, either part time or something for summer. But, almost any job will be somehow good for you in the long run because of the communication, people skills, etc that you learn.
