Chances. …?

Oh, do shut up.

If you look at the fate of Internationals this year, especially those needing financial aid, it seems clear that you will need to apply to schools where your stats are off the charts. Schools that you would be over qualified for as an American.

i think u have a good chance at all ur schools. princeton looks at internationals same as us kids so u shouldnt worry about having to be "overqualified" i think u wil get into the majority of ur schols

Harvard and Stanford is a reach; its a reach for everyone.

However, you certainly do have a good shot at the rest; I'm not too sure how much effect applying FA has on international chances. Solid glowing essays; thats what will get you in.

well the admissions this yr prove that the officers are crazy and probably drunk when they looked at the applications so the chance thing has become a little meaningless i think

but what you have look real gd, take a shot, you do stand a chance

Harvard? Yale? Princeton? Forget about them. You can't even get into a decent community college without a 3000 SAT. Give up, and try to get a job at a factory or something.

your stats are good...but like everyone says, its HYP... sooo... your stats are good but not spectacular

I know a few friends from China, who have said this is a tough position to obtain for high school students. Most students who had this extra curricular ended up at Stanford and even Harvard. With the great stats you already have in academics, you have absolutely great chances.

You're reading into one position too much. Holding ONE position at ONE Model UN conference hardly means this guy will "end up at Stanford and even Harvard." CC posters are guilty of this all the time.. no need to raise people's hopes irrationally.

That said, you've obviously got solid stats. Good luck :)

raven001: I'm not trying to raise the OP's hopes irrationally. The people I know personally knew the students involved in China's Security Council - this position isn't a minor position in "Model UN" at all. The persons I mentioned who got into Harvard held this position in China, had 1400 SAT scores, and got into Stanford one year, and the next individual got into Harvard. To my understanding, only one person in China holds this honorary position; it's an international extra curricular.

pepero,
you look like a great student. Be aware, though, that internationals have a rougher in admissions at most US schools than American kids do. As every one will tell you - you need a couple of safeties. To see why, take a minute to do a rough estimate of your chance of rejection from all the schools on your list (this is 2003 figures from USNWR)

.9 x .89 x .8 x .87 x .77 x .75 x .7 x .68 x .6 = .091 or 9.1%

Admissions is going to be more competitive next year than in 2003, and will be worse for internationals requiring financial aid. Your list - with the addition of a couple of less selective schools - will reduce your risk of rejection to something more reasonable. As jurilly said,

"well the admissions this yr prove that the officers are crazy and probably drunk when they looked at the applications"

If you read the individual boards on acceptances/wl/rejections, its pretty apalling.

Having a diversified school porfolio can help you avoid an unintended gap year.

You can look at Alyssia from Malaysia who is posting in a thread on top here, for a lesson about how she applied HYPSM + a couple other ivy's, no match or safety schools and rejected at all. Develop a more deep and personal list of colleges.

pepero, don't hate me for doing this. I'll just do it as I do for the other applicants who post their stats on this board. I know you so I may have an advantage over other people who try to evaluate your chances.

Bad senior year:
Harvard-reach
Columbia-reach
Stanford-reach
Georgetown-reach
U Penn-reach
Berkeley-reach
Johns Hopkins-reach
NYU-match
U Chicago-reach

Good senior year:
Harvard-reach
Columbia-reach
Stanford-reach
Georgetown-safety
U Penn-reach/match
Berkeley-safety
Johns Hopkins-match
NYU-safety
U Chicago-safety

Choose your safeties wisely...don't apply to schools where you are wildly over qualified- I was waitlisted by my safety.

Your chances at places like PEnn improve SUBSTANTIALLY if you are not asking for FA

How important it is to for you to get into an Ivy League School ?
HYP

How about looking at some LACs? They're known for giving generious FA to international students. Like Grinnell. ;)

You're a decent candidate at the top schools. Let me put it this way: I will not be surprised if you get in, but will also not be surprised if you don't.

dude, how did you get so many great internships? i'm into fopo/poli sci and i'm having an impossible time getting an internship over the summer!

thanks jw! actually the thing you did is really discouraging for me - especially my bad senior year which I think I am heading towards...=-=

even if I don't apply for FA, it'll be hard?
god-_- life sucks
