Hi, I'm going to be a senior in the fall. I have an unweighted 3.3 GPA for junior year (including electives like band and animation). It is a 3.1 unweighted for combination of soph and junior year (both years I had 3 honors and 2 AP classes). Weighted GPA would be about a 3.7-3.8. On the SAT reasoning test I got a 710 on Math, 690 reading, and 650 writing (10 on the essay, kinda messed up the multiple choice ). I am retaking them in November. For the SAT2 Math IIc I got a 690/680 (not very happy about that score since the test wasn't that hard). I took the chemistry SAT2 in the fall and get my scores back Oct 24th. I play baseball every year for my high school, I am the Tuba player for the concert band, I have tutored kids in math and done community service at a hospital (106 total hours). I took 2 AP courses junior year (math and spanish) and senior year I will be taking 4 APs (math 4ap/BC calc (could drop to ab), spanish, physics C, US Gov). I could be looking at a 3-3.3 UW GPA and 3.9-4.25 weighted for senior year. I am looking mainly at schools preferably in MA and maybe in New England.

Here are some schools I am considering so far:
Tufts
Brandeis
Boston University
Boston College
Bates
Wesleyan

What schools should I add or subtract? And is EDII for Tufts too much of a reach for me? (my guidance counselor thinks so)

I believe you have a shot at Brandeis and Boston University. The other schools are one sort of reach or another. No problem picking one for ED, but I wouldn't suggest Tufts, maybe Bates or Wesleyan.

So you need a realistic safety and some additional matches. A couple of liberal arts schools to look into are Franklin & Marshall and Dickinson. Skidmore might be a good option, too. Good luck.

You could also consider UMass-Boston or Northeastern University, if you're looking for more urban schools. Also try University of New Hampshire, Colby College in Maine, UMass-Lowell, or several of the schools in upstate New York (SUNY-Potsdam or SUNY-Stony Brook, for instance), would be good matches.

umasses and northeastern are more like safeties for me
i dont want to have to go to umass unless i have to
i couldve done really bad in school and still gotten in, i dont wanna waste my work

Unless you know for sure that you want to go to a school you shouldn't apply ED because it's binding. If you might want to go to Brandeis or BC you shouldn't apply ED if you really want to go to Tufts.

Look at Hamilton College, in Clinton, New York. (it was rated 15th by usnews, not that that matters too much) it offers a solid liberal arts education and shares many applicants with a lot of the schools you mentioned.

im not into catholic schools, bc isn't a bad college and i guess im willing to put up with religious courses (im not catholic)

i definitely want to go to tufts but my counselor said that other colleges wouldn't like it if i applied ED to tufts... and he said i had a tiny tiny chance of getting in anyways with my stats

"or several of the schools in upstate New York (SUNY-Potsdam or SUNY-Stony Brook, for instance),"

Stony Brook, is on Long Island not upstate and I've heard that it doesnt have a very attractive campus or surrounding area. But I have not seen it in person.

Your list seems like an odd assortment, with some big, some small, schools some urban, some small town. Why did you pick these particular schools? That information would be helpful in knowing what other schools to suggest.

ckp, it could be that your million EC's are what kept you out, you spread yourself too thin and made it look like you were only trying to impress colleges.

Stony Brook doesn't have a very attractive campus, but the surrounding area actually is pretty nice (it's basically my hometown!) There is a commuter rail station at the edge of campus that will take you to NYC in less than 90 minutes, and it's not far from the beach/upscale shopping areas. There's not a ton to do in the area, but it's ok.

well i picked these schools because im limited to new england
if the size or location don't really fit me but it is a good school and its one of the only places i can go to, then ill work with it

edit: for example bu seems too big for me, but if i get in and i get lots of financial aid and stuff like that i would be willing to go

obviously first choice for me would be a better school if i could get in

im probably not going to apply early to brandeis anymore...
so its either Tufts EDII, Wesleyan EDII or BU EDII if I do apply early (probably not BU since it's not really my first choice...) and it doesn't make much sense since BU isn't too much of a reach so I have a pretty good chance of getting in. About 120 people applied from my school last year and like 70-80 kids got in I think.

im guessing it will be tufts but wesleyan is a kind of a possibility
what do you guys think now?

btw I just got my chem sat2 back and got a 680

there are lots and lots of good schools in the new england area, just most of them aren't going to be household names like the ones you've given so far. You've got a decent gpa, decent SAT scores, some ECs. You sound like a good student, but there are lots of other students with similar or better credentials out there.

You've got a choice to make. You can continue to focus on schools that are reaches for most students. Or you can build a basket of schools, some of which are reaches but most of which are matches. Its up to you how you want to spend your time.

Updated List:
Boston College
Boston University
Bates
Tufts
Wesleyan
Brandeis
UMass Amherst
Wheaton College
Connecticut College
Northeastern University
Babson College
University of Vermont

Can someone sort through and say which are reaches, matches, and safeties? Just so I can see how spread out everything is.

mikemac: hmm well I mean I want to get the most that I can out of the hard work I put into school. I want some reaches but I obviously know I have to have safeties and matches as well. I'll be sure to read that excerpt, thanks.

Also I am a first generation student and the first to go to college. I am asian (not that its really a minority anymore at some good schools...).
Stuff to add to EC/awards: I have a painting hanging in a museum, and got 9th place in the National Spanish Exam if those things help at all.

If you want business in Boston add Bentley College. I'm thinking of transfering either to Bentley, Boston University, Boston College or Pepperdine.
