I need to decide whether to stay in state here in illinois, particularly chicago, Or go to St. Louis, for premed.

Now, i have lots of friends here in Chicago, and i just plain love my city. I might go to depaul or uic, but i heard their premed sux or is too difficult. only 10% go on to med school. St. louis on the other hand, is so lame, compared to chicago the streets are empty! But they claim that 60% of their premeds go onto med school... first off, are these stats true?

Almost not credible. Very dramatic if true. Most likely using different statistics.

1.) If UIC premeds who apply to medical school get rejected 90% of the time, that's ridiculous. However, if only 10% of all freshmen premeds eventually get into medical school, that's actually quite reasonable.

2.) If SLU premeds who apply to medical school get rejected 40% of the time, that sounds a little optimistic to me, bluntly, but not unheard of. (For reference, that's about ten percent worse than Stanford.) However, if 60% of all freshmen premeds eventually get into medical school, that's way too high and not credible.

You should select a place where you will love spending your next 4 years. Undergrad years will be the best time of your life, considering that you will be slogging thereafter in your med school for 4 yrs + residency yrs+ fellowship yrs.

So, why not apply where you will actually stay and complete your undergrad?

Do you not have any alternatives to Chicago? What about NY?

There are other things to consider. UIC is a tough grading school. It, on average, grades harder than UIUC. The university is determined to not have grade inflation. Of all the departments, Chemistry is the toughest grader.

thanx for all the replies. Yes, i'd rather stay in chicago, but i also want to go to a school that'll teach me what i need to know to score high on the mcat, prepare me for med school (maybe even some research hours) , and get me a good gpa. Does this sound like any school in chicago? (dont say northwestern and u of c or anything in that range, cuz i cant get in)
