Help me my Stanford Friends

I cant get help in the regular forum, or the financial aid forum. I need your help.

I am finishing up the rest of my apps:

Ok, so I don't know anything about financial aid. I am 99.999999999% sure I will not receive any, should I apply. My mom wants me to. Botton line: Does marking I will be applying for financial aid hurt admissions chances, especially at schools that are not need blind.

My question is... does just the fact that you mark that box hurt your, or do adcoms see your FAFSA and then judge the impact financial aid will have on their decision. I am pretty sure they would see my money situation, and would realize I would get 0$. But do they just see that I am applying for financial aid, is it a stigma?

What percent of people apply for aid? Are you guys?

In need-blind schools it will not affect your chances. And there is no stigma of any kind associated with applying for fin aid.

My question is about non- need blind ones then I guess... do they just see you are applying for aid, or know how much aid they would have to give you?

I am not an expert, but in non-need-blind school your need for aid will, obviously, work against you. But if you do need the aid, you don't really have much of a choice, do you?

But what if you dont need much aid...?

I mean... will they see that i dont need a lot of aid, and not count much against me... or will they just see that I am applying for aid, and then hurt my chances?

even if it is need blind, it still hurts a bit, thats BS and dont let them tell u otherwise. They have u check it off on the app for a reason, and they will all tell you that no school is completely need blind. Otherwise they wouldnt be getting the percents so similar everyyear.

Sorry, Ares, but that's simply wrong. The adcoms don't conspire against applicants; if admission wasn't need blind, they wouldn't say it was need blind.

Wolffy25: Definitely apply for financial aid. It can't possibly hurt you, and if you don't you could possibly miss out on, say, $5,000 a year. 5k a year doesn't sound like much when in comparison to Stanford tuition, but $20,000 is $20,000.

no one is conspiring, its just being real. Colleges are sorta business y'kno. But dont take my word for it, anyone can ask this question in the parents forum (it has been asked to death), and experienced members liek Mini will say exactly what I said. But im not gonna argue, I doubt its a huge deal.

pg 53, parents forum "are colleges lying about being need blind".

If I put no right now on the applcaiton... can I still apply later if I decide to?

Well, you can check out how much aid you're probably going to get here:

http://www.finaid.org/calculators/

I doubt you can change your mind afterwards.

SO WHAT SHOULD I DO!

my parents make a lot... not like millions... but a decent sum, that calculator will take too long

Did anyone here not apply for financial aid?

ok, say you got in, and it cost 40k or w/e, would your parents pay? If you can tell you wont get any money, which is like they make over 150k total and dont rly have other expenses, then yeah i doubt theyd get anything, then dont check it. but if they can get anything then you should.

anyways if I were you I wouldnt want to check that box, cause people need all the help they can get to get into stanford. but thats just me and its tough to pay that kind of money and know u have to.

Yah, I think they wouldn't get any aid... maybe Ill jsut not say im gonna apply, but apply anyways

thats a little dishonest.

well, kind of... but if they see it as a problem, then they dont have to give me aid... I just wanna go to their school, I dont care about them giving me money

(I wont do the above... I have decided to apply for aid at schools that specifically say need blind admissions, and not others)

Totally agree with Wolffy25...

I am applying to Stanford, but not for fin aid. Fin aid would be useless for me because I would not get much, and whatever I would get would be in loans.

I do not have anything against merit scholarships ^.^. I'd love for a Fortune 500 to pay for a part of my tuition. More money for the car I would need to buy if I were to get in. (You really can't do the whole no-car thing in CA, now can you?)
