Help me narrow down my list of schools!

I live in Southern New Jersey. I want to major in IT. I have about a 92 average with heavy amounts of honors courses through junior year. My SAT break down is: M 660 R 650 W 570. I had a composite score of 27 on the ACT I took at the beginning of Junior year. I'd be lying if I said financial aid was not a factor. SO, could you guys help me narrow down my list, or maybe suggest one or two more schools to look into?

Thanks

Virginia Tech is a public U and won’t give you any aid so if FA is a concern, drop it. CMU will be a big reach. What do you want to study?

^ She said IT on her post. So that would def. make CMU a very big reach.

VT awarded nearly $34M in scholarships and grants last year.
Erin’s Dad, do you know for a fact that that it’s restricted to in-state students?

According to the VT Common Data Set, State/District Residency is one criterion in the aid decision (as one would expect for a state university). I’d be interested to know if it’s a hard requirement.

TK, I did not verify that VT does not offer FA to OOS students. I was really mentally comparing to UVA which meets need for all students admitted. But of that $34M you mentioned, only $2.5M is institutional. The rest is from outside sources like the state and federal gov’t. That means there is MUCH less available to anyone outside VA.

If JMU=James Madison U, then JMU is also OOS for the OP and she’s not likely to get any aid other than federal Stafford loans (and Perkins grant if she’s eligible) there either.

I think Erin’s Dad is right. The student is very unlikely to get good FA from VT as an OOS student. It looks like most of its aid is federal and state - that’s not good news for an OOS student. And, the student’s stats are not high enough for good merit from VT.

VT mid 50s

SAT Critical Reading: 540 - 640
SAT Math: … 570 - 670
SAT Writing:… 540 - 630

And, it’s unlikely that the student would get a merit scholarship or an FA preferential package from VT.

ljstella: Do you know what your family’s EFC is?

Do you know how much your parents will pay each year for your education?

Just wanting FA is not enough. You need to know if you’ll qualify for FA and you need to know whether a school is likely to have the money to award FA.

It looks to me that you have too many reaches and schools that would be unlikely to give you great financial aid. You need to apply to more schools where your stats would be considered high, to better your chances at merit and aid.

Carnegie Mellon mid 50 range

SAT Critical Reading: 620 - 720
SAT Math: … 670 - 780
SAT Writing:… 620 - 720

Carnegie Mellon is a big reach for you since your scores are near the bottom quartile. And, unless CMU meets 100% of need with little or small loans, you won’t likely get a good FA package from them if you’re admitted.

Does anyone know if CMU meets need w/o big loans?
