~~*Help me narrow down my list*~~

Jmanco- Wow you make Rice sound quite appealing.

Poubelle- Haha I love Brown =P

Vossron - Does Reed have good public transportation from campus to downtown Portland? I heard it was in a kind of isolated suburb and you needed a car to get around.

"my parents told me to avoid the south."

Why is that? Do they think the south is too conservative and homophobic?

you should definetely look into plan 2 at ut.

It sounds like you'd like it a lot.

austin is cool, and it combines liberal arts with a big university.

Like I said :) "great public transport" which means a bus from Reed's front door directly to downtown in 20-25 minutes, plus two more bus lines supporting nearby areas. A bus connects to the trolley to the airport.

Grinnell is one of the hidden gems of the college world.
One of the schools I really regret not applying to actually..
It has your kind of social scene along with Oberlin.
Best of luck!

However, if you get Brown, I would recommend picking it no matter what else happens.

"Why is that? Do they think the south is too conservative and homophobic?"

Essentially. (I know it is very stereotypical)

Vossron - Wow that sounds great. I've visited Portland quite a few times and liked it. I loved Voodoo Donuts. They have delicious flavors like maple bacon donuts. Yes--bacon. A whole slice on top.

kicharo -- your stereotype of Texas doesn't hold true to Houston. So if you're expecting narrow-minded, gun-toting cowboys, think again. I grew up in a large east coast city and Houston is much more open-minded, tolerant and multicultural. Houston is a dynamic city with people of all different types and ethnicities. It's a can-do city with open arms that allows all kinds of people to arrive, be welcomed and be part of the action. Rice is especially tolerant and integrated as a result not only of the student population but the influence of the residential colleges (no Greek scene). The social scene at Rice is very inclusive of everyone. Please don't discard a gem of a school because of a misguided stereotype.

And Houston was recently rated #1 by Kiplinger as a Best City: No. 1: Houston, Texas - Kiplinger.com

austin isn't very homophobic either.

if i got into brown, I would really love it there

blackeyedsusan - You make quite a good argument for Rice. I'll definitely go read about it in my college guidebooks.

I'd recommend Bob Jones.

For LACs, Wesleyan and Macalester manage to be in cities and have access to all that that offers while still having true, full campuses that are separate from the cities.

Both are amazingly gay-friendly.

Wesleyan is slightly larger in size, but both are LACs.

2G1C4L: not even close to clever.

I don't even understand his comment...

Bob Jones is a right-wing radical Christian (yes, I know it's an oxymoron) university.

Yale would be perfect for you!

Yale is a place where people from all walks of life and interests are from. Not to mention it has a 10%ish admit rate with the brightest kids from the country, so you can expect at least a bit of nerdyness.

Yale is known as the gay Ivy. I also heard this one story where 1 out of every 3 guys are gay/bisexual. Don't know if that's true though...

Yale is a small school with around 2000 people.

I'm not too sure of the cirriculum.

Yale is known all over the country for its exceptional strength in the humanities.

Yale dosen't have greek life.

Also look at Bowdoin. Its in Maine but a half hour from Portland, a very cool, culturally vibrant city. Its very liberal, no greek life, and the best, I mean the best food in college period. Yeah, its cold, but its pretty, esp if you like the ocean. The curriculum is loose but rigorous, and the people are quite smart and intellectual, but more laid back and social than at Swarthmore or Williams. (Its ranked 7 among LACS, next to Pomona.) visit it, why dont you? and Good Luck.
