Help me out USC vs. NYU

I just got into the Tisch film program off of the waitlist and they said they need an answer in the next day or two. I was going to go to USC and study creative writing (ya not their strongest area) but now I gotta decide. If anyone could tell me about NYU and/or Tisch and/or the film program I would appreciate it, or even more specifically why I should choose NYU. Thanks alot

I am also interested in creative writing which is why its even a question

i picked stern no money over marshall half tuition. so that's some indication, at least.

USC creative writing isn't their strongest area but you can take film and screenwriting courses (they have an incredible screenwriting minor) and if you did that combination of courses it would be a great program. I'm thinking of doing that if I get into USC (i'm a transfer and transfers cant apply to the screenwriting major so I put creative writing and I want to minor in screenwriting or possibly transfer to film as a junior- if I get in i'll be a sophomore so i'll have a year to take classes and apply to film if I want to or just stick with creative writing) I also applied to NYU as a transfer but I haven't heard back yet. I will pick USC over NYU though if I get into both just because I absolutely loved USC when I visited and the weather is better than New York. Plus, LA is really where the film industry is so if you are at all interested in film I'd go there. You don't have to major in film to work in the film industry and you can make greast connections at USC just by taking film classes and joining the student film organizations and getting internships in LA. But, congrats on tisch, that's amazing! You have to make the best choice for you and either way you'll be going to an awesome school. Good luck with your choice! Post when you decide! (I posted this response on the USC page too)

I can't speak to the majors really, because I haven't been involved in either one yet, but I got into film production at both USC and NYU. USC is definitely a much smaller program, but due to my preference of the actual program at NYU plus the fact that I feel I will be happier in a city environemtn than in a football-frat party-suburban(ish) enviroonment, I chose NYU. Its just my personality. Consider financial aid, then pretend that money doesn't exist. Where do you feel like you'll be happier?

I know it's not exactly the same situation, but I had to choose between Cinema Studies at NYU Tisch and Critical Studies at USC CNTV. I went with NYU. In the end, it came down to NYU's philosophy with respect to film. I tried to dodge the Hollywood VS. Indie/International issue (I think you know which school is which) for quite a while, as I told myself that no college would teach one and not the other, but now I admit that a school's educational philosophy, whether you're studying creative writing or film, is an important thing to consider. Style will eventually come down to you as a filmmaker/writer/individual, but you're surrounding yourself with people that will generally believe in your school's philosophy, and you're spending four years of your life and an incredible amount of money to be immersed in the school's perspective, so you better like what you're getting. I'm not telling you to decide based on this, but I think it's something worth considering. Also, consider whether you're more into creative writing or film, because there's a large difference between USC's creative writing program and NYU's film program. You may always be able to change things at whichever school you pick, but it's not guaranteed. As for LA VS NYC, I agree that it's a very important factor to consider for the thought process Dawn exemplified, but I don't think you'll miss out too much on the film industry in either. LA may have a slight advantage in interships, but NYC is certainly not lacking, and you're free to work wherever you want after graduation.

Congratulations and good luck with your choice... You can't really make a bad one. :D

If you want to do film, and can't do is at USC, definately do Tisch.

If you can do film at USC it basically boils down to NYU is more experimental whereas USC is more mainstream/hollywoodish I've heard.

I really appreciate the input and I made the decision to go to NYU next year, so thanks alot for the help everyone
