please give me your opinion on whether i will get into 1. the university and 2. the smith school of business

29 ACT
3.86 GPA (strong public school)
5 Weighted (AP/Accel) classes and lots of honors classes
OOS (Ohio)
Great Recs
Great Resume
Okay/Decent Essays

thanks in advance

Is your GPA weighted? You are in for regular admissions. I am not sure about Smith. I am not too informed about what it takes to get into there.

yes it is weighted but my unweighted is still right around a 3.8 i believe. My school is different in that getting an A in an AP class is a 4.5 instead of a 5. thanks for the response!

anyone out there familiar with Smith’s admissions?

Maryland is very numbers driven. I do not know the SAT comparison to the ACT. Kids around here with 4.0s and 1100 SAT for CR and Math get rejected or admitted for spring.

29 ACT <—> 1290-1320(Score range) or 1300(Single Score) CR+M SAT

I agree that you’re probably in for the university; maybe not for Smith, tho…but there are people here familiar with what it takes to get into Smith after you’re already at UMD…mostly it’s getting good grades, I believe… Good luck.

I think you will get into both the college and the Smith but barely. Being from Ohio might help. The mean SAT score was 1360 which is about 30 on the ACT. 50% range was 1280 to 1440 for the freshman class of 2010-2011.

thanks for the responses everyone, you are all awesome!

one last question: if i do get into the university but not smith (which sounds somewhat likely), how does transferring into smith within maryland work? how hard will this be and what kind of GPA am i looking at to do this?

also are most people directly admitted to Smith or do most have to apply after their freshman year or something like that?

I’m a freshman at UMD and I’m a direct admit to Smith. I was OOS with 3.5 UW GPA and a 1320 SAT and even though I feel to be on the lower end of the scale , I think you have a decent shot at getting in direct. There are a LOT of kids who got into UMD who weren’t directly admitted to Smith. If you don’t get in directly you are placed into a program called “Markets and Society” and on the floor of my dorm there are prob close to twice as many markets kids as their are direct admits. Markets kids take basically the same classes as Smith kids, but have large class sizes (could be 200-300 kids) compared to Smith classes (20-30 kids), less special attention, and don’t have access to certain Smith-only events such as business etiquette dinners and various seminars that are fairly helpful. Transferring in can be tough. There’s a lot of competition from what I have heard, but I have also heard that those with at least a 3.5 GPA after their first 2 years should be fine. I was in your same shoes a year ago so I hope this helps. Good luck!

thanks for the post i really appreciate it
