Help me out!

hey there!
So I'll be a junior next year and UCSD is one of my top choices. I want to major is BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING (sorry for the caps but a lot of times I'll write it and nobody sees it haha). I was wondering what my chances are of getting in.
IM NOT A CALI RESIDENT :)

My freshman year grades weren't the best, and my unweighted gpa was a 3.53.
I've taken all the honors courses I can possibly take freshman and sophomore year (heres the list)

9th:
honors geometry, algebra II, english, world history
10th:
honors pre calculus, chemistry, english, latin 3
I also took AP Bio and European History as a sophomore. The only regular class I took like year was gym :)

As a junior I'm taking APUSH, APART, honors calc, honors physics, honors latin 4, honors english, advanced cad (hopefully I can manage A's in all of them)

AP Exams I plan to take by the time I graduate:
AP Bio: 3
AP Euro: 4
APUSH (jr yr)
AP Art (jr yr)
AP World History (out of school)
AP BC Calc (sr yr)
AP Literature (sr yr)
AP Gov (sr yr)
AP Latin (sr yr)

Test Scores:

I took a practice SAT and got an 1810, but hopefully my whole summer's worth of studying can bring it up to at least a 2000. Originally my scoring was M(600)Rdg(610)Wrtg(600)

SAT Subject Tests: Math2 (750)
BioE(690)
I'll be taking the US History and Physics ones too next year :)

EC's (as of now)

Girls Varsity Basketball (2 yrs) (this was my last year on the team)
Latin Club (2009-present), 2nd Vice President (2013-2014), 1st Vice President (2014-2015)
I also have a state leadership role in the state Latin Club but I won't say it exactly for security purposes :)
Drama Crew (2013-present)
ACYOA Youth Organization (2011-present)
I plan on doing Speech and Debate at school until I graduate starting next year.

I also have two jobs, one at an art museum and one as a swim instructor at the YMCA

I've got roughly ~130 hours of community service so far. Hopefully that'll be over 200 by the time I apply

Awards:
Magna Cum Laude on the National Latin Exam

Ethnicity: Middle Eastern-white

UCSD has an amazing biomed engineering program and I plan on applying to that early action. the only other schools I'm doing EA to is UMich and UConn :)
Thanks for doing this!

Not great, it’s a very competitive major and your GPA is not great.

wow you are insane. With those stats, you will be fine.

3.53 UW GPA is low, look at last year admission statistics.

@DrGoogle Well my school is #2 in the state and extremely competitive (so we don’t have class rank), so it’s not really expected for us to have 5.0s or anything. like the valedictorian this year had a 4.7 weighted which isn’t wicked high but still got into columbia bc of how competitive our school is. im just hoping my ecs help me out since i have leadership positions at the state level and stuff

I don’t know much about OOS high school but if you are a CA student, that is very low GPA for UCSD or many UCs. In the past few years think have gotten very competitive, I think my nephews were only accepted to UCR with similar GPA from a very competitive high school with IB track. So I don’t know what to tell you except add more schools and good luck. ECs help but UCSD tends to be more GPA/SAT combination. I think it also does like lots of volunteer hours. Do you volunteer a lot for your ECs?

I’m a volunteer lifeguard and I volunteer at a soup kitchen and as a math tutor. I think my weighted gpa by the time I graduate will be ~4.2 so I’m hoping thats good enough

Just be sure to apply to some safeties, both academic and financial. I know a lot of people won’t believe it, but a 4.2 weighted GPA is pretty low for UCSD, and you need to get your SAT scores up also. Take a look at threads for this year’s freshmen to see how competitive admissions have become. Being OOS may work to your advantage as the UC’s are trying to bring in money. How are you set financially? The UC’s offer little FA, and as an OOS, you are looking at $50,000+ a year.

Agree with Dr. Google and takeitallin; your assumed 1810 score and GPA are not competitive for the UCSD. OOS students do not qualify for need-based aid so assume IF you get in, you’ll be paying full fees of $55K to $60K per year.

I would suggest you apply but agree with another post to cast your net wide and have some safeties in there too. My son’s friend wanted to go to UCSD with your same major. He had a 4.3 GPA, close to a 2300 on his SAT with tons of AP’s. His school is very competitive, highly ranked school and he was rejected to UCSD but got into Stanford. We all think it’s because it’s a hot major and the competition is very stiff. Best of luck, but do try to apply to other colleges.

@frogdragon118‌: An FYI: No UC’s offer Early Action only regular decision with applications due Nov 31.
Continue to improve your GPA and aim for at least 2100+ on your SAT since BME is probably one of the most competitive majors. At the end of your Junior year, calculate your UC GPA (see link) and to be competitive you would need at least a 4.2+ UC GPA: <a href=“GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub”>http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/</a>
Good Luck.
